We travel to Portland regularly and have tried quite a few of the downtown hotels and only a few of them (ie. Riverplace) have made us want to go back. We will be counting the Heathman in that list now.
We stayed at the Heathman for 3 nights. The location is smack-dab downtown, very easy to find and close to all the things that you want. Even though I really love a great modern hotel there's always a feeling of elegance to a heritage type of establishment. The lobby is compact but well designed. The interiors are fun and art deco/oriental looking. The lounge is also very elegant looking. We didn't get a chance to try it out but it looked lovely with the high ceilings and velvety couches.
Our standard room was small but they did a great job of fitting all the essential elements in without it being too cramped. It looked like it was recently renovated. I enjoyed the interior design and the art all around the hotel. Especially the Warhol orangutan at our floors elevator lobby. The bathrooms looked brand new and the room had enough light when you wanted it. I really enjoyed the french press in the room with freshly ground coffee in the tins. l would probably only ask that they also have some tea. I liked the little slippers, lit mirror and toilettries (L'Occitane). The bed was ultra comfortable with a great big fluffy duvet. The hotel was a great relaxing and quiet spot after long days of exploring the city. The service from the moment we valet'd the car was generous and professional. The one thing that was annoying was the spotty wifi. We ended up using the room ethernet cable to the laptop but a little annoying for ipad use.
The quality of the service and the level of hotel was an amazing value for the price we paid. We happened to get the room on sale for a summer weekend at $135/night. Which I think is a steal for the location, comfort and service that we received. I couldn't even get that low of a price via hotwire or priceline for that caliber of a hotel.
All in all I would come back for sure.
