“Sophisticated and Exceptional Service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2012

We travel to Portland regularly and have tried quite a few of the downtown hotels and only a few of them (ie. Riverplace) have made us want to go back. We will be counting the Heathman in that list now.

We stayed at the Heathman for 3 nights. The location is smack-dab downtown, very easy to find and close to all the things that you want. Even though I really love a great modern hotel there's always a feeling of elegance to a heritage type of establishment. The lobby is compact but well designed. The interiors are fun and art deco/oriental looking. The lounge is also very elegant looking. We didn't get a chance to try it out but it looked lovely with the high ceilings and velvety couches.

Our standard room was small but they did a great job of fitting all the essential elements in without it being too cramped. It looked like it was recently renovated. I enjoyed the interior design and the art all around the hotel. Especially the Warhol orangutan at our floors elevator lobby. The bathrooms looked brand new and the room had enough light when you wanted it. I really enjoyed the french press in the room with freshly ground coffee in the tins. l would probably only ask that they also have some tea. I liked the little slippers, lit mirror and toilettries (L'Occitane). The bed was ultra comfortable with a great big fluffy duvet. The hotel was a great relaxing and quiet spot after long days of exploring the city. The service from the moment we valet'd the car was generous and professional. The one thing that was annoying was the spotty wifi. We ended up using the room ethernet cable to the laptop but a little annoying for ipad use.

The quality of the service and the level of hotel was an amazing value for the price we paid. We happened to get the room on sale for a summer weekend at $135/night. Which I think is a steal for the location, comfort and service that we received. I couldn't even get that low of a price via hotwire or priceline for that caliber of a hotel.

All in all I would come back for sure.

My husband and I stayed one night at the Heathman. We actually live in Portland, and needed to out of our home because of construction. We decided to spoil ourselves and stay in this elegant hotel. From the moment you pull up at the curb, the valets are dressed in traditional uniforms. When you enter into the lobby the elegance is evident in the woodwork, furnishing, and uniformed employees. They address you by name, and no request is an issue. We stayed in a one bedroom suite. The sofa in the sitting room was so comfortable, my husband took a nap after a room service lunch. We ate downstairs in the restaurant for dinner, listen to jazz afterwards, and then around midnight went upstair to a very comfortable bed. In the morning, the shower was great and super hot. It was a wonderful experience and we would stay there again, and recommend the Heathman to any guest coming from out of town.

We stayed at the Heathman for 4 nights and found the hotel to be very nice with clean rooms that were well cared for. The hotel is historic, meaning that the rooms can be on the small side; even our King Suite felt a little claustrophobic at times. The bedding and pillows are very comfortable and you have the option when making your reservation to choose amongst many options. The free wi-fi is a nice touch but the signal level on the 9th floor was spotty at times. The hotel is in a quiet part of downtown but still within walking distance to many locations. The service provided at the hotel is first-class; anything we asked for, they made sure to accommodate.

Room Tip: Rooms on lower floors look directly into alley wall.

I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights while on a business trip in Portland. Although my company paid for the hotel room, the rate was surprisingly low for this super great location. (think under $150 per night). This hotel is within walking distance of tons of restaurants, parks, movie theaters, and your local favorites like Starbucks which there are 2 locations within 2 blocks!
The hotel is an old-world style hotel, and it's really cozy and elegant. The front desk staff is extremely professional and explain all of the amenities of the hotel when you check in. The front door staff is dressed in old English attire which makes the arrival experience charming.
The room itself was a decent size with free internet. There is a mini bar which has lots of snacks that are not at a crazy expensive rate (although, alcohol was a bit pricy). The bathroom was very small however, and the door had to stay closed in order for you to stand in front of the sink comfortably. Bathroom toiletries provided by L'Occitane were great...shampoo and conditioner were a botanical blend while bar soap was a lemon-fragranced shea butter soap. That might not be important, but if you are thinking of bringing your own, save the room in your carry-on, these toiletries were top notch.
We did not eat in the restaurant, but we did frequent the bar as a group every night and it got crowded between 5 and 9. I think that there were only 2 bartenders on staff at one time and I would recommend adding a third as the bartenders forgot about refills because it was so busy. There was a decent wine list and all cocktails were available with top-shelf brands.
The drive to and from the Portland airport was about 20 minutes each way. There were plenty of taxis available, but reserve one the night before if you have a very early flight. The front desk is VERY accomodating.
There is a small fitness center on the 3rd floor with 2 running treadmills, an elliptical machine, and a stationary bike. It opens at 5am, and I got there at 5:15 am and everything except one treadmill was taken. Towels are provided in the fitness center.
There is a MAX stop within walking distance of the hotel and the tyrain system is very safe and clean. the front desk can help you through figuring out where to go.
The only other thing I would add is that valet parking overnight was over $20, so if you were planning on renting a car, be mindful of the cost.
Overall, this was a great hotel from the Preferred hotel chain.

Room Tip: ask for a high floor. The fitness center is on the 3rd floor and my colleague stayed 2 doors down an...

The Heathman is a fine hotel in the old-world style, with superior service, excellent food, and quality amenities. The problem is that most of the rooms are quite small, while the larger suites generally face directly onto a brick wall. (The wall has been painted with a mural, but that doesn't help much.)

The hotel's location is as good as you'll find anywhere in Portland. It's just a block from Pioneer Courthouse Square, and adjacent to the city's large performing arts center. It's also only a block from the Portland Art Museum, and very near several top restaurants, including Higgins and Southpark.
