After years of dubious service and food, this joint finally closed its doors a couple years back. Nothing has yet to replace it ... and I don't know what happened to the guy who owned this joint. But, there are plenty of other places on Hawthorne, Belmont or Divison that do a good breakfast and a mean lunch. Check 'em out!

We stopped for brunch at the Tabor Hill Cafe because it is so conveniently located n the heart of the Hawthorne Neighbourhood, a few doors away from Powell's Home and Garden bookstore. This is a comfortable Portland neighbourhood with adequate off-street parking. The cafe is run by a lovely Asian couple who are both very cordial. They serve breakfast all day long. Their menu was especially amusing in that it carries the idea of having photographs of every offering to a ridiculous extreme; I could have figured out what a side of bacon looks like without a picture of three strips, cooked, on a white plate. I ordered a very simple breakfast and was sadly disappointed; I wanted to like this family-owned quaint little place. The grease in which the hash browns had been fried was due for an oil change several hundred miles before it flavoured my potatoes. The scrambled eggs were overdone and somewhat vulcanized. I ordered whole wheat toast and received toasted rye bread. And the bathroom was not particularly clean; the cleanliness of bathrooms is non-negotiable.

Good food, good prices. Always consistent. Very homey feel to this place and the staff are always incredibly nice and welcoming. They make you almost feel like one of the family. If you want a nice , relaxed breakfast or lunch, without all the crowds this is it . This is a great spot to get a bite on Hawthorne. Across the street from Bank of America and Fred Meyers.

When visiting in Portland, we always look for an excuse to go to the Hawthorne district just to have breakfast or lunch at the Tabor Hill Cafe. The dishes are all very well prepared with quality ingredients (.e.g, orange juice squeezed from real oranges), extensive menu, impeccable and friendly service by this family-owned business, which seems to include about three generations. We probably go this restaurant only about twice a year, but the owner always seems to remember us and gives us a warm welcome.

A family tradition...one of the best places for cheap eats on Hawthorne!
