I booked a "Starlight" room with the expectation of an amazing room with a wall of windows that would allow me to view the stars. While the room did have a great view through the wall of windows, there were many other items that were problems.
I have now stayed at both the Hotel Monaco and Vintage Plaza. I must say that the Hotel Monaco is a much more elegant Kimpton quality hotel. The Vintage Plaza is trying, but falls short.
The biggest issue was noise in the room. The first night I was trying to sleep and my neighbors came back to their room at 11:30 and it was like they were in my room. I heard every word of every conversation they had. In addition, the "wall of windows" have an electric shade that covers the windows. The problem is that if either room on either side opens or closes their blinds it is like they are doing it in your room. You have this very loud electric motor noise while the shade is opening and closing. It is very annoying if you go to bed early or try to sleep in. My third night in the room I got to hear a vicious argument between the couple on the other side of my room. I would think that more soundproofing would have been installed between the rooms. It really was like there was nothing between the rooms.
The Starlight rooms are all on the 10th floor. The room itself was very comfortable. The star carpeting was a nice touch. The vinyl Star headboard was a bit tacky especially when some of the color was peeling off. There was a nice settee and a retro chair and ottoman in the room. These were nice touches. The bathroom, while updated was not very luxurious. The bathtub had lime stains on the floor of the tub and there was black mold on the bottom of the shower curtain. I did have problems with the shower faucet that was never fixed correctly.
If they want to be competition to the Hotel Monaco they need to raise the bar.
