“Disappointed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2012

I booked a "Starlight" room with the expectation of an amazing room with a wall of windows that would allow me to view the stars. While the room did have a great view through the wall of windows, there were many other items that were problems.

I have now stayed at both the Hotel Monaco and Vintage Plaza. I must say that the Hotel Monaco is a much more elegant Kimpton quality hotel. The Vintage Plaza is trying, but falls short.

The biggest issue was noise in the room. The first night I was trying to sleep and my neighbors came back to their room at 11:30 and it was like they were in my room. I heard every word of every conversation they had. In addition, the "wall of windows" have an electric shade that covers the windows. The problem is that if either room on either side opens or closes their blinds it is like they are doing it in your room. You have this very loud electric motor noise while the shade is opening and closing. It is very annoying if you go to bed early or try to sleep in. My third night in the room I got to hear a vicious argument between the couple on the other side of my room. I would think that more soundproofing would have been installed between the rooms. It really was like there was nothing between the rooms.

The Starlight rooms are all on the 10th floor. The room itself was very comfortable. The star carpeting was a nice touch. The vinyl Star headboard was a bit tacky especially when some of the color was peeling off. There was a nice settee and a retro chair and ottoman in the room. These were nice touches. The bathroom, while updated was not very luxurious. The bathtub had lime stains on the floor of the tub and there was black mold on the bottom of the shower curtain. I did have problems with the shower faucet that was never fixed correctly.

If they want to be competition to the Hotel Monaco they need to raise the bar.

Thank you very much for your review. The Starlight is just one of our many great room types, we are very sorry it was not to your liking. We hope you do choose to stay with us again or at another Kimpton hotel.

Great things:

- Fantastic downtown location, but rooms still nice and quiet
- Very comfortable beds
- Super helpful staff
- Has a personality, doesn't feel like a chain hotel

Could improve on:

- Restaurant seems expensive, but there are loads of great places nearby for breakfast and dinner at a more reasonable price.
- Somehow the rooms seem very dark and can be a touch oppressive. Fine when you're ready for bed, but would be great to have the option of more light when you need it.

Upon arriving at the hotel, we were greeted by a friendly valet who informed us that parking would be $35 a night, or he could direct us to a public lot nearby. Since I was expensing the trip, and since our hotel rate was at an insanely low at $125/night we decided to valet it. They made sure to make a note that we'd be leaving the hotel the next morning at 4 a.m. to catch our flight home, and had our car ready and waiting at that obnoxious hour.

The lobby was beautiful, including marble, an indoor fireplace, and onsite dining. Upon check-in we were informed we were told that we were upgraded to the Starlight Room, a room featuring one wall of skylight-like windows and an astronomical theme (everything had stars on it, including the bed). The amenities from the shampoo/conditioner/body wash pumps installed in the shower to the in room Keurig coffee maker were top notch. Regrettably (or fortunately as was the case), the hotel is conveniently located to so many excellent restaurants and bars, that we didn't return to our room until about 3 hours before our scheduled 4 a.m. departure.

If you're looking to stay in the heart of Portland and love getting treated like royalty affordably, look no further than the Hotel Vintage Plaza.

Great Kimpton. We got one fo the Starlight Rooms which as big windows and lots of natural light. Staff was great. If I had to choose between here and Hotel Monaco, definitely would stay at Hotel Monaco instead.

I stayed at the Vintage Plaza while in Portland on business. It was centrally located, easy access to the trains and a plethora of restaurants and shopping near by. Staff was pleasant and the room was on the small-ish side but very comfortable - as a boutique hotel, it was what I expected. I love the little touches. Wine hour and express check out made my stay even more pleasant than anticipated. It is also pet friendly, which is nice.
