We booked this adventure as a treat for my train loving son's 5th birthday. It was a 3 hour drive from our home to the train station and if we do it again we'll definitely stay overnight as the town is so cute. We booked the Diamond seats which puts you in Dome seating in booths on the second level. It was really nice. I originally booked the First class which is table and chair seating in the snack bar car. This section is great for adult parties and if you want to have wine and beer near. This was definitely the "party car". Standard seating also seemed very nice, it did seem colder in this car and you had people walking through it to get to the snack bar, however the seats were comfy and this and the Diamond seating seemed the best for kids.
The "Train Robbery" was fun and not scary for kids as the actors were great with all ages. There was also a magician who visited each table. The ride was fairly long and the show was fairly short so I'd suggest bringing something along to keep the littles occupied. You are allowed to bring food and drink on the train. The BBQ lunch you can buy is pretty good for $12. Bringing your own food can save you some money though for buying something cute in Mt. Hood or a hotel room to stay the night.

The railroad is just that - a railroad spur of about 15 miles or so. But, they put on great themed trips that are worthwhile. Thomas the Tank Engine comes by in the summer sometimes that my kids used to love when they are young. They also do a Christmas trip that the kids love.

Absolutely disappointed in this trip. Parking costs $5, find street parking if you can. Very bumpy train and tracks with disgusting bathrooms. Hard to relax and left extremely tired. Some people were screaming and talking extremely loud with children crawling in the middle aisle and on the fixtures. Absolutely no entertainment mentioned in other reviews and most of the view was blocked by overgrown walls of blackberry and ferns. The rest of the scenic train ride was of Pear Orchards, fruit packing companies, junkyards, and what looked like a shanty town under a giant metal overhang with numerous parked RVs. You rarely even get to see the river or any natural scenes.

Absolutely no commentary in the train on the way to Parksdale. Attendants didn't even interact with our train outside of promoting their snack train on the other side of the train. Food was overpriced and a joke. Better off bringing snacks and going to the market or BBQ restaurant across the street in Parksdale. I can't believe there is an actual markup for those super dry pulled pork/chicken burgers they sell vouchers for in the train station. They made the man in front of me pay double ($24) because he didn't have a voucher beforehand. Walk across the street to their restaurant and the same pulled pork plate is $10... Also, couldn't see Mt. Hood because of clouds and haze from wildfires. No entertainment, from locals, just a lady sitting under the tree selling small $3 baked goods that have been sitting in the 104-degree weather.

The family that sat near us on the train was apparently left stranded in Parksdale and no one seemed to care. Finally some commentary on the ride back but was really mistimed that people around me thought it was a recording. We only knew it wasn't when the announcer told us to have a happy Memorial Day then corrected herself to Labor day.

This place isn't worth it at all, what a horrible disappointment. The drive here and the numerous national parks are a better way to spend the weekend. Instead of being bored to tears on a rocky slow train going past highways you can drive past.

My wife and I enjoyed the scenic ride on the old train through the picturesque Hood river valley. The scenery is spectacular and the ride was very nice and relaxing. The rocking of the train car as it moved up the tracks gave a feel of and old fashioned ride from days past.
Our meal at the park was not a highlight of the trip but adequate. The train robbery guys could use a bit more imagination, energy and enthusiasm in their lack luster performance.
However, We would return as the ladies on the train staff were friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. The ride was easy and the views from the train were a rare and picturesque experience.

Trip was fun and had a great day to see the mountain and sights along the track. Check in was fine, but you need to arrive early to get this done. People arriving five minutes before the train starts loading (10:30 A.M.) had to wait. They don't have the staff to check people in and load at the same time. So come early. We were in the dome car and I would recommend it. Higher and easier to see sights. Staff is very friendly and once they were able to get the sound system working the information was super!

We felt the time at the Parkdale could be longer as the bathrooms are small and the lunch service has only one line. A few portable toilets and two lines for serving would help. Food was good and sitting outside for the meal was enjoyable.

It was a good trip overall and we enjoyed the people we sat with.
