“Good value, nice room but noisy”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2012 via mobile

We stayed in Hood River ( which we loved) for 2 nights. We chose the Hood River hotel as we like different, historic lodgings and it was very reasonably priced compared to the other options. We deliberately booked a courtyard room to avoid the potential train issue and because the river view didn't seem all it was cracked up to be. The room was nice with a genuine historic feel. The bathroom was very small, (what else would you expect in a historic hotel which originally would have had only shared bathrooms) but was very cleans and the shower was powerful and hot. The only complaint was that our room (320 I think...) was next to a room that seemed to have some kind of machinery (maybe the laundry as it seemed to be a gathering point for the maids in the late afternoon) which made a fairly loud constant noise. In the end it didn't disturb our sleep as we spent the whole of both days hiking and rounded them off with a couple of pints of the local, excellent brews, but it might put others off. We didn't use our breakfast vouchers deciding that, even taking the $10 discount into account, we'd get more for our money in the Doppio cafe a couple of blocks up Oak st, which also had the advantage of being a bit more lively at 8am when we were breakfasting. On the whole though would stay again as it was good value for money and very well located.

Thanks for sharing thoughts from your recent visit. It sounds like you had the experience we hope for our guests -- representative of the era in which the hotel was originally constructed, but updated facilities to meet contemporary needs (hot, full shower). Yep, we think we're a pretty good value, too, given that we're right in the middle of Hood River's fun zone. We're sorry about the disturbance you noted from the laundry near your room. We've reminded our staff of the need to minimize conversation -- and volume -- in that area of the hotel. To ensure that their work doesn't disturb your desire to sleep in, we ask that they start no earlier than 9:30, and operate the washing machines no earlier than 10 a.m. So, thanks for helping us help you and future guests. Sorry you chose not to join us for breakfast -- we think our menu offers a lot more variety than you'll find at one of our several fine coffee shops (and we love Doppio, BTW; great coffee, people-watching). The voucher offered for use at breakfast will basically cover the cost of one meal; pretty sweet. Try us -- you'll like us.

Recently stayed in this hotel....Our third floor room did not have any noise issues, even with open window. Street parking was nearby, and you don't need to have a pass on Sunday. We had a pleasant and charming stay...folks at desk always helpful.

I have been on a historic hotel kick lately so decided to stay here when a business meeting brought me to Hood River. The hotel is very cuts and nicely preserved. It's an old hotel but very clean and preserved well. Hard wood floors are a bit creaky but in good condition. The ha
Lways all have historic pictures in them that are interesting to look at. The windows are big and the view is decent even in a town side room. All of the old radiators are still in the rooms and the paint and tile is all in good condition.

The people are very friendly and the breakfast quite good. If you stay you receive a $10 per room voucher towards breakfast. Parking requires you to feed a meter on the street. They will sell you a half day permit for $3 which is very handy for the morning If you don't want to feed your meter by 8am.

The only real drawback to the hotel is the creaky floors - I was glad to be on the third floor with no one above me, the shower was super small, and being on the town side you could hear traffic and the train but it's a small town and that settles down early.

I would recommend it as a place to stay and will stay again.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a courtyard or river view to get the quietest rooms.

Nothing fancy but you get the necessities and a clean room that's within walking distance of several breweries and coffee shops. There's a $25 pet fee but you get a doggie gift bag and the staff was extremely understanding when they had to call us because our dogs wouldn't quit barking... you also get a $10 voucher towards breakfast and excellent coffee!

For [pet owners (like us), traveling with our furry buddies is the best. We're happy you and yours found your way here. Yes, the pups can get excited and anxious in unfamiliar surroundings. Thank you for understanding out staff's need to calm the puppy party. Our goal is the comfort of all our guests -- a delicate balancing act, as you well appreciate. We look forward to your next visit.

Wife wanted (needed?) to go down to Oregon to pick up a new pup, and we decided to stay the weekend in Hood River. GOt here way too late due to some blocked off Yakima Nation roads, forcing us to more than 100 mile detour, but once we got here, all was OK.

Got a room on top floor (3rd) looking to the East, allowing for a view of river, freeway, and the Celilo restaurant - and a great sunrise!. Given that the weather was perfect (no wind, no bugs, and about 75F), we could sleep with window open, only disturbed now and then by the horn from a passing train (as Hood River stretches out along the Columbia River and the busy train tracks, there are no places in town you will not hear the horn - unless you want to stay in a bunker). For sleep quality, the only thing that was strange was that the heat (central boiler, radiant) came on sometime in the early morning and it got HOT inside the room, even with window open. Sad, a waste of energy, but figure out heat would likely be needed during a normal weekend this time of year (it was way nicer than "normal"). And as building is well over 100 years old (and for sale), it likely does not carry the most advanced energy management systems.

The girls working the front desk were nice, and provided us with ($5) a parking pass, allowing us to park all day without having to feed the meter (both a friendly and smart gesture). Pass is NOT valid for parking along Oak Street in front of hotel, but we found parking just under our window both nights.

You get a $10 voucher/day for breakfast. Food was really good, service friendly, but not very fast. This time did not really matter, since we had a nice view from the patio for people and dog gawking. Plenty of that :-)

This is an old building with its quirks but also charm. Nice large lounge area by the front desk with tons of outdoors magazine and reading. There is also a workout room, hot tub, and sauna on the 2nd floor, but we never got a chance to even check them out (busy schedule).

Short, if you expect W standard, this place is not for you, but we'd go back in a heartbeat as this place has quality, charm, location, w/o robbing you cold.

Room Tip: See notes above.

Thanks for sharing your impressions of our little piece of history. We couldn't have said it better ourselves. We're glad to hear how much you appreciated our staff -- they're the best, and always willing to help guests enjoy their stay. Sorry about the heat issue. You're right -- it's been a chilly spring, and we had our system geared for the norms. We're glad our windows open -- unlike some hotels. Fresh air is the best. Glad, too, that you appreciated our trains. We find their passage comforting. We hope you can stay a bit longer next time -- the gym and spa are really nice, and a great way to unwind after a long day wine-tasting or hiking.
