Owner description: For more than 140 years, Lakeside Chautauqua has welcomed families to the Lake Erie shore to take part in a summer Chautauqua experience dedicated to nurturing mind, body and spirit. Lakeside Chautauqua is an historic community in Ohio that offers an abundance of spiritual opportunities, educational lectures, cultural arts performances and recreational activities during its 10-week summer programming season. It is also a year-round destination for groups of all sizes.

We’ve been to two other Chautauquas, the home in NY, and Bayview in MI, and this one ranks up with both of them. We,
enjoyed a lunch in Hotel Lakeside and a stroll down “Ohio’s Most Beautiful Mile” and it was indeed beautiful! I just wish entrance fees for casual visitors like we were could be a bit more reasonable. But, I very much enjoyed the cottage architecture and getting a peek into this historic and ongoing community.

This city costs $7.75 for adults for 3 Hours. The city is cute but not many shops. The mini golf is fun.

Ok, most of the reviews are either 5 stars or 1 star so I thought I would give my middle of the road opinion with pros and cons.

It's peaceful.
It's quiet.
Kids are free to roam about the gated community and it is incredibly safe.
Most people are some of the kindest people I have ever met.
Tons of activities for all ages: Lake, pool, tennis, shuffleboard, kites, basketball, tennis, pickleball......endless fun!
Very cheap classes from sailing to the arts!
Concerts and shows
Cute shops that are not overpriced
If you forget your pass, no one makes you go back to your house (except the front gate!).
Your kid can learn how to sail in a week!
Your family bonds and gets back to being together and unplugged (if you want to be unplugged).

If you haven't been there for over 30 years, you are not cool. Don't pretend to be cool, but telling people you are new to lakeside is also not the best idea as some will monitor you to make sure you are following the rules.
There are tons of tricks you need to know in order to get the most out of your stay. For instance, you can register online for classes before you arrive.
Parking (in your own driveway!) is $12 a day.
You need a pass if you are going to stay inside of the gate. Even if you aren't using anything! And it is expensive.
I personally was bossed around by a few older veterans of lakeside. If you aren't quiet enough during an intense shuffleboard match, or if you don't sprint off of a pickleball court when it is someone else's turn, prepare to be scolded.
The swimming pool is packed every day. That's fine, but they run out of chairs.
Here is the big thing you need to know: Classes are scheduled for certain times, but you are on LAKESIDE TIME. They could end an hour early, or go over. When you make plans around a class your kids are taking, be careful.
Sailing class was disorganized but still worth the money. They were the most inconsistent with the 10-12 class time. Sometimes it would end at 11.

The thing is, my kids would give it 5 stars and that's what matters in the end! I would stay away from houses being rented out through VRBO. I would also go with a house with central air, but that is just me being picky. Window air conditioners are fine, but they are loud so it was hard to chat with them on. I would buy everything early and get your tickets as you pull in (will call). The pool is in the back of lakeside and the lake is in the front so it is ok to get a house "up the hill". Finally, ignore the couple of negative or bossy people (who you may not even run into) and just focus on your family and having a great time!

There is so much to do, and yet it is also as restful and relaxing as you choose. The atmosphere within this vacation community is safe, fun, and very relaxing. This was my second time visiting friends while they were vacationing here. The history is rich. The activities are plentiful! When you are there, don't miss getting the Lakeside news paper for the week, and seeing all of the activities that are scheduled. Speakers, Concerts, Comedians, Art classes and shows, a craft fair...and so much more! Both visits I enjoyed great shopping, they have sweet, adorable shops. The cabins I have seen so far have been well maintained. The walking path along the lake is a must! You cannot relax and rest in a more pleasant atmosphere. Family friendly & for all ages!!!

If you need T-shirt shops, bars, wave pools and amusement rides, this is not the place for you. To riff on a Prince hit, at Lakeside, you party like it’s 1899.

The pace is slower here. It’s quaint and a throwback. I have a 6 year old girl and she enjoys God Squad and the art classes. There is a nice miniature golf course, world class shuffleboard courts, tennis and pickle ball courts, walking trails, at least four parks and incredible landscaping and gardens throughout. There is a pool and fitness center now as well as swimming and a small beach at the lake. There are lectures, entertainment in the Hoover and plenty of adult recreation and art classes if so inclined. The view of the islands is spectacular and so is the sunset on the dock.

After 51 weeks of rushing, it’s nice to slow down and enjoy the simpler things.

We can’t recommend Lakeside enough.
