“Forget the chains, stay in this friendly owner run hotel”
Reviewed 26 February 2012

We spent 4 nights in this hotel last week. We had a very enjoyable stay with a lovely comfortable room. Toni and Mo were very welcoming. As part of the deal we needed to eat in the hotel restaurant - this was no hardship as Toni is an excellent cook, the venison steak was excellent. If we are in that part of the world again we would definitely stay here again. Dave and Sue

Room Tip: Ask for Room 3 - it has a 6 foot bed........

Had a fantastic 2 night break at the Lorna Doone Hotel in Porlock with 10 of my friends, Mo and Toni couldn't do enough to help us, I was planning my 40th and enquired whether the hotel would let us run a murder mystery party which I am pleased to say they were very happy to do. I booked 4 twin bedrooms and a 3 bedded room all of which we were very happy with. I spoke and corresponded with Mo prior to arrival who arranged a 3 course menu for us to choose from for the party night the range on the menu was good and there was plenty for us all to choose. Mo and Toni also prepared a separate function room for the evenings entertainment which was great as it meant we didn't frighten other patrons with our over the top costumes and blue hair!!! The food was home made and very good and excellent value too. Mo and Toni also prepared cocktails to accompany the meal 'fuzzy navel and Woo Woo' which went down a treat with the guests.

The rooms were nice and warm, beds were great, and clean and tidy. Some of the bathrooms had been redone and new others were older but clean and perfectly functional.

The hotel had a lovely feel to it and is well positioned in the village but parking is at a premium at the rear of the hotel although there is a public car park across the road (free over night)

I would recommend this hotel, breakfast had a nice variety (I tried the full English and the next day kippers and poached egg) was well cooked and presented.

I would recommend this hotel to others and so would all my friends we ranged in age from 27 to 63 years old females.

Thank you Mo and Toni for making it a great 40th for me.

Room Tip: The rooms on the first floor seemed more spacious than those on the second floor and also for famili...

Stayed here for one night, paying £50, for which we got a small double room at the top of the building. No shower, only a bath available with a shower head attachment on taps for rinsing purposes only. No complimentary toiletries or hairdryer, just one plastic cup in the bathroom. Window overlooking street was cracked and chair very rickety. No sockets available to charge your phones, laptops etc. All very old and tired really. However, staff very pleasant, However, staff very pleasant, we were given a nice pot of tea when we arrived, drinks in bar reasonably priced and breakfast was fine. Free Wi-fi available in lounge/dining area (but not throughout hotel as website suggests). Small parking area at rear of building, but would only really accommodate a couple of cars, so we had to park in the car park along the road on the second night, just paying up until 6pm then it was free until 10am the next morning.

Room Tip: Bring your own toiletries!

My girlfriend and I stayed for 1 night would liked to of stayed longer.
The staff are very friendly and welcoming.
We arrived late on friday evening and they recommended the Royal Oak pub next door for food. Where we had some good pub grub and our dog even got a chewstick.
The breakfast was lovely and very filling especially as you can make as much toast as you like to accompany the cracking full english.
The place has character and we found the rooms and decorations in keeping with the area.
Some other reviews mention that the decoration might need updating but we thought they were good and had character. Maybe other people are use to soulless clinical branded hotel rooms where you find oversized comedians on your bed. :-)
I would recommend this place to anybody who wants a night away where you get an experience of the English countryside. Where to me the English countryside is welcoming, picturesque and a bit eccentric. Also we went for a walk from Porlock Weir and had some of the best fish and chips ever from a small cafe run by the Exmoor Cooking company. The mushy peas were amazing and we have tasted the Padstow equivalent, this was better and much cheaper!
