Dear Chillingham Castle Staff:

Having just recently concluded our trip back to the US, we are glad to catch up on our correspondence with you.

Firstly, please know how delighted we are with our experience in staying with you. The castle has so much to offer and we are sad we didn't allow enough time to fully take it all in. We will certainly be correcting this in the not-to-distant future as we plan to return for a longer stay next time.

Our room was a lovely place to stay. We thoroughly enjoyed all it's spaces and the fine accommodation each afforded, especially the wood burner. What a cosy place to rest and reflect! I was able to keep the fire burning through the night and believe you provided just the right amount of kindling, wood logs and starter bits to make for a successful fire. Great ambiance in addition to the lovely warmth it gave off was a welcome bonus.

Additionally, close to the castle as it is, the seclusion of our apartment provided us with a special sense of residency not possible in more commercial lodgings. We immediately felt at home. The lack of distraction from tv and internet is a joy in itself. We self catered from a roadside cafe in Milfield before arriving. They fixed a fine all-in-one evening meal (foil pan) which we simply warmed atop the wood stove before dining. It was so easy.

The parking for this apartment is surprisingly convenient and so near the door as to make one's bag transfer nearly effortless.

Having allowed ourselves just over an hour before staff departed for the day, we look forward to exploring much more of the castle next time. The docents we did hear briefly seemed excellent and we will be seeking more of that when we return, as well as strolling the gardens and finding the cattle.

Thanks for being there with such an authentic opportunity to stay in such a historic place. All in all, your accommodations are truly great value for money. We'll be telling others of your true qualities. You're so much more than a ghost thrill and we saw or heard none of that, to our satisfaction.

Until next time, best regards.

Mike and Sherry A.

Our second visit to Chillingham Castle and it didn't disappoint. The enthusiasm of the guides are matched by the obvious enthusiasm of the castle's owner whose copious guide is well worth buying. The exhibits are eclectic and really offer an insight into the owner's ancestry and the castle's history. The cafe is so atmospheric with its roaring fire and minstrel's gallery. The gardens are beautifully restored too. This is worth repeated visits as there is so much to take in. Next time we will see the famous cattle too.

We really enjoyed the castle the guide book is a must for £2:50 its full of information about each room very well put together easy to understand so much to see and the gardens and church both beautiful its well worth £9:50 entry fee so many objects in every room the whole place is filled with so many interesting things plus the guides in some of the rooms are very knowledgeable and more than happy to answer any questions and also tell you a few tales about the Castle and it's ghosts we really enjoyed it and will most certainly be back in the summer to view more of the grounds and Woodlands

There are lots of reviews below, some strong feelings about the price of food, the clattered displays and whether the letters at the entrance are genuine. This does not detract from the fact that this castle is of immense historic significance, that the owner has restored it to a liveable state and that the "USP" of the place must be the spooky - ghost thing. I don't believe in spirits, but there is certainly an odd feel, possibly due to the stuff on display. I was a little "bothered" to see tapestries, paintings and wonderfully old furniture not well looked-after. I don't particularly care for taxidermy and furs, and certainly am not interested in someone's "Eton Suit" but you cannot deny that it's worth visiting as a quirky place to see from the inside, and the gardens / grounds are stunning.
