“Breaking journey for lunch”
Reviewed 4 May 2012

Decided to break journey north to have lunch. Stopped many times in the past at the old Scotch Corner Hotel and now it is the Holiday Inn, Darlington. Excellent decision......the place has been completely restyled and it looks very good. Excellent lunch, with attentive staff and the best coffee in an age.
Well worth another visit...may even stop again on the way back down the country...enjoyed it so much

I have driven past this hotel almost every day for the last 4 years and it looked tired and well past it's prime. Despite the recent refurbishment and rebranding to Holiday Inn I imagined it would not be a great place to stay.

However, we have had the builders recently and needed somewhere to stay for a few nights - we chose the Holiday Inn for convenience and checked in with low expectations. we were presently surprised. Lovely reception area, bar and restaurant. Friendly and helpful reception staff. The room was lovely, had been very well refurbished the zircon wad efficient and the bathroom modern and quite spacious. Free wifi, mineral water and a paper for Priority Club members was a real bonus. Thoroughly recommended

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back as they are a little quoted

The forbidding building was always enough to put you off, but the inside is very much more welcoming now than it has been in the past.

The only reason to stop at Scotch Corner is to break a journey as it's like the end of the world in terms of charm, so to find a nice meal in convivial surroundings was a welcome surprise after a long journey.

We actually stayed at the Travelodge across the road junction (and no complaints there) and really had little option but to walk across the junction to find something to eat.

We had avoided staying at the 'old' hotel based on past experience but now it's smart, warm, friendly and the food in the bar was very acceptable. A huge Holiday Inn revamp has obviously been carried out.

Service was friendly and quick. The girl at the bar was asked what white wines there were - she handed me the bottle saying 'you look I can't say it' .... not at all stuffy and made me laugh - honestly is always the best policy! Go girl ...

So next time we're on our way to Bamburgh it's the Holiday Inn we'll happily book for an overnight stop.

Room Tip: Can't help there - we only used the bar. But if the rooms are like the new plush reception any s...

I stayed here many years ago, long before it became a Holiday Inn.

So I was very surprised when I walked through its doors today and a 4 hour meeting with a client to be held in Fratelli's (?) bar to the left of reception. Wow - the whole place has been completely reworked with a very modern, fresh, clean and aesthetically pleasing design.

The exterior needs updating if they're to make the most of this because they're not doing themselves justice.

I can't speak for the accomodation as I was there purely for the meeting but I clearly wasn't the only one because the area of the bar was very busy with other meetings taking place (at least 4-5 groups of business people who obviously know how superb the place is now for this type of thing).

I was amazed to find they offer free WiFi in this area without the need to be staying and no requirement for a login either.

Service was friendly although we did have an issue when ordering snacks at lunchtime - they forgot our order. The explanation was that it didn't "print out in the kitchens" and they were apologetic but it still took a good 20-25 minutes for the sandwiches to arrive when they realised (when we prompted them).

7 coffees and 3 sets of sandwiches came to £33 which I found very reasonable by most hotel standards.

I can't give it 5 stars because I didn't stay overnight so I don't want to mislead people and the slight hiccup with the lunchtime order is factored in too.

However, if you need a location to hold a business meeting in the Scotch Corner/Darlington/Richmond area (not too far) then I can't really think of anywhere more convenient, accessible and welcoming.
