It's a ruin and there is not much left to look at. You have to have a good imagination but the walk round the river is nice.

We went there with our 6-year-old and 2-year-old children.
We decided not to take a buggy and carried our 2-year-old in a baby carrier, which was a good idea. There were some boards to tell children about the history of the castle. Well-maintained. The staffs are nice and friendly. The garden could be a bit better (only bushes)...
We had a good play with our 6-year-old, serving us like a medieval servant in the castle etc. It was a fun trip.
We are members of Historic Scotland, so we had free entry to English Heritage.

What a brilliant setting for these mighty walls. The views are wonderful and the ruins impressive and large. The keep holds sad reminders of the time when conscientious objectors to the Great War were confined in the castle. We visit often, the last time in December when we were offered mulled wine to keep out the cold! From the river below you can follow the famous drummer boy's walk arounr the river and also visit the nearby army museum
