What a brilliant setting for these mighty walls. The views are wonderful and the ruins impressive and large. The keep holds sad reminders of the time when conscientious objectors to the Great War were confined in the castle. We visit often, the last time in December when we were offered mulled wine to keep out the cold! From the river below you can follow the famous drummer boy's walk arounr the river and also visit the nearby army museum

Richmond Castle is a rather large castle ground situated on a nice hilltop over a beautiful river in the center of the town of Richmond. Outside the walls are the still-thriving remnants of a medieval village, and inside, a relatively well-preserved castle ruin. Some walls on the grounds have been knocked down to ground level, so you can only see where other castle buildings stood at one time. But the more intact parts offer a good glimpse into castle life. I highly recommend coming down the rather tiny spiral staircase (all stone, of course, so watch your head!) that exits at the bottom of the main keep building. Don't forget to wander over to the edge and see the specatcular view down to the river below, with a beautiful stone bridge still in use a quarter mile away. You might even have crossed that bridge coming into the town! Richmond itself is a rather normal small British town of this area, it's just that it has a nice castle in the middle of it. There are some nice old buildings and churches to see in nearby parts of the town, so be sure to wander around and see the sights.

I have been visiting Richmond's spectacular castle since the age of five...sixty years later it still gives me a thrill when I see its towering keep somberly watching over the town. The views from the top are entrancing...look up the beautiful dale or down onto the buzzing market town. As you climb up the long stairwells inside the keep you glance out to views through slits of windows and conjure up all the activities over the centuries which have taken place in this sombre heart of the Castle. For children and adults alike Richmond's Castle must be one of the very best attractions of this beautiful town. I now live withins its shadow but never tire of its majesty.
