As a regular 'dine outer' my least favourite time of the week is Sunday lunch when establishments offering delicious and varied food in the evenings dumb down for the roast brigade. Not at Apicius where the same exemplary menu is offered for lunch service on Sunday. Six courses, one of which is sweet and another cheese that you can create your own mini menu - for the traditionalists a small plate to start, a bigger plate for main and dessert or cheese to follow. Equally the taster menu enthusiasts can pick a small portion of each and spend a long leisurely lunch with sublime flavours and textures.
I chose three small plates, the mussel and pork belly brochettes with lentil cream, the brill with endive and celeriac then quail with caramelised onion purée and poached pears. Everything was without fault. Still with some room to spare (I have a very healthy appetite) I chose some cheeses to finish and Tipsy Billy was a discovery I will definitely be trying to source.
The wine list was well balanced with offerings for most palates and budgets and was refreshingly European heavy!!
Friends finished with coffee and petit fours which I am reliably informed were top notch.
Not living locally it will be a while before we are able to return but it will be TOP of our list when we do.
