“Not as bad as others would have you believe.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 November 2011

My husband and I were due to attend a friends party and this was the nearest place to stay and I must say in general it was pretty good.

I am really surprised at others comments in regards to the staff. We found from check in to check out that they were really helpful. Even our very late arrival to breakfast (not having pre booked), they were able to accomodate us and the food was hot and presented to a good standard and we only had to wait 10 minutes, which was no hardship looking over the Common and on a nice sunny day. The staff were friendly and couteous throughout.

The rooms are of a good size and have all the mod cons. They have obviously decorated them fairly recently, The bed was big and comfortable. The only downsides as far as the room goes is that the water pressure is not very good and during the night we heard what we assumed to be the boiler/heating coming into life, but neither of these were of a huge issue to us.

We had dinner in the restarant and the range was good and the dishes priced accordingly.

Have we said in more luxurious surroundings - yes. Have we stayed in more basic accomodation - yes, but the Two Brewers sits firmly in the middle ground. Good basic rooms, food and service at a resonable price.

Checked in by a polite and helpful lady. Room was a good size, clean with usual expected ameneties. Everything in the bathroom worked as it should. Comfortable bed. Slightly above average pub meal in the evening. Varied menu to pick from at average prices. Waiter was a bit irritating trying to push on particular dish - presume they had got a bulk supply running out of date. So far so good. Quiet night once the bottles had been thrown out. Breakfast let the place down. No fruit until we asked for it and generally poor selection of cold food. Waited a long while for our fried breakfast. Make your own drinks.

After a mediocre to poor first visit we were tempted back by the superb location and outlook over the village green. A rather abrupt woman behind the bar firstly made a mistake in who she needed to serve first and when I pointed out her error, I was loudly and unjustly told off. But it was late and we were hungry. 55 minutes later without any food I asked what was happening and was told that there had been a major mess up of orders in the kitchen. No apologies were forthcoming in fact when we were not being ignored we were clearly regarded as trouble makers. Food finally arrived 20 minutes later and was fairly tasty, if a little cold.
We will certainly not return to a place where there is such a total disregard for clients.

General impression of the establishment was good and we have no complaints at all at the standard of the bedroom. However, the attitude of several of the staff was poor, being unhelpful, rude and lacking rapport with customers. I would like to make mention of the person serving breakfast, which will be remarked on below, as she gave the impression that it was too much trouble to serve us. In fact, one smile would not have gone amiss as we did try to lighten the atmosphere but to no avail. As to the cooked breakfast itself, this was of a poor standard as the presentation was below expection as the bacon was extremely hard and had obviously been precooked and then warmed up. Also, a couple of specified items on the menu were not displayed. Some advice for future visitors is to use the bedrooms but do not waste your money on the cooked breakfast. One further observation is that under our breakfast table, obviously a snail had found its way into the dining room and had left a silver trail - not a good thing to see in a dining room!!!

Room Tip: Room 106 was very good

First impressions were good, had to wait at the bar to be checked in as no one at reception, however they were busy, check in was ok….ish! My room 202 appeared ok, four poster bed complete with sawn of posts and outside decking balustrade ball end caps. Meal and restaurant service good, however when went back to room around 10.15pm there is an awful noise/vibration emitting from one section of the room, obviously the central heating system/plumbing needs sorting, rang and rang reception no answer, had to go down and find someone, complained about the noise/vibration only to be told “were full nothing I can do about it” persisted with my complaint, receptionist (with a large smirk on her face) agreed to come and listen to the noise, initially she blamed the central heating in the corridor and stated (again with a smirk across her face)” we are full all the rooms are taken, so I don’t see what I can do” then said, she would get someone from the kitchens to come and check, chap turns up dragging his attitude with him, opens central heating cupboard in corridor, makes his definitive diagnoses and states “it’s the heating system kicking in”. that’s ok then Einstein thinks I, eventually Einstein ventures into room listens and above the din he agrees that he can hear something….. hear something! I’m surprised the walls haven’t given way with the vibration. Well its now 11pm noise is just as bad, all hotels in local vicinity are full so looks like I’m stuck with it for one night anyway. Avoid if possible! Just noticed water pressure is shi... poor. shower in the morning should be interesting.

Room Tip: Don't use room 202 or 204
