We visited for a family lunch on Saturday last week. Two of our party had been before when Gypsy Kitchen was run by the previous owners and had really praised the experience. Unfortunately, this has collapsed under the new ownership. There was a whole list of disastrous events:
* Daily specials board included 'Broccoli and leek quiche'...my vegetarian partner ordered this, and only discovered on eating a mouthful that the quiche contained ham.
* I had cottage pie...the minced beef was poor quality and the accompanying vegetables were dreary and uninspiring.
* Two people had another daily special which was 'Macaroni Cheese'...what arrived were two smallish bowls of dried up, overcooked pasta in a gloopy, tasteless sauce.
* Pudding menu listed rhubarb and custard...sold out.
* The two young waiting staff were pleasant, but completely out of their depth. Didn't know what was on menu and got orders wrong.
* Tables weren't cleared between courses, or when customers left.
* When the bill came it wasn't itemised or written down. The total was ludicrously high for what we had eaten and it was clear that the waitress had worked from memory and using her rather unreliable mental arithmetic. We had to ask her to write down every item with its price and then add up using a calculator. This produced a correct total that was significantly lower than the price originally quoted.
* There was some kind of pie lying uncovered on the counter where customers went to order and pay.
* My partner in the end ordered a cheese scone - this was also in an uncovered display. By the afternoon he had developed stomach cramps and diarrhoea...coincidence???

Will never go back to this place.

Having visited this cafe on many regular occasions for different tasty meals, I gave it 5 Micheline star rating. Within a week of my review, Nicky and Reece who had owned the Gypsy Kitchen, had left for pastures new and had sold the cafe. My review was for the owners Nicky and Reece. I have no idea what the cafe is like with the new owners.
For those of you who are reviewing the gypsy cafe and read a review 5 star rated, that was pertaining to the last owners.

A short menu but that means you get quality. Lovely breakfast. Lunches very flavoursome. All food made from scratch and served in a very reasobale time, considering all freshly cooked. If only they had a drinks license so we could enjoy a glass of wine or beer with our meal. Service excellent and we noted how well the staff dealt with unreasonable customers, very polite and non-judgemental. Lovely 'kitcheny' atmosphere.

This is a 5 star cafe in every respect. The menu is well thought out, the food is first rate, excellent quality, beautifully cooked and presented, proper quality food with the best chef in town, he knows his business. There is a friendly family welcome. Good communication with customers. For those that would like to know more about the menu with food sources, how the food has been cooked, explanations given. The price is exceptionally reasonable.

Petersfield has been blest with caring owners of the cafe, giving us excellent quality of fine foods in every day choice of meals.
