Review of South Bar & Restaurant - CLOSED

South Bar & Restaurant
Cuisines: International
Description: Situated inside the South Lodge Hotel in Chelmsford, Essex, the South Bar restaurant is an elegant eatery ideal for discreet business dining and romantic tables for two. The hotel itself is located in a Victorian town house, only a 10 minute walk away from Chelmsford's town centre and 14 miles from the M25, and the dining room is decorated with stylish chocolate brown and vanilla leather chairs, blonde wood flooring and fresh flowers. The international menu at the South Bar restaurant is created using local produce where possible, and favourite dishes include the duck breast served with Savoy cabbage, bacon and new potatoes, and the platter of farmhouse cheeses with chilli jam and biscuits.

My wife and I spent one night at this hotel and would NEVER consider stay again. They were informed that I am disabled but put us in a room in the eves, four flights up, and NO LIFT. Had an evening meal, fish and chips. Fish was a frozen portion and was still frozen in the middle!!!

A group of 10 of us went for a birthday meal. The service was exceptional with the two waiters anticipating every need. The food was hot ,nicely presented but unfortunately rather tasteless. The restaurant clean but plain somewhat unimaginatively decorated. A shame though if the food had matched the service it would be my first choice in Chelmsford.

We eat out quite a lot, so it takes something to impress us. This Restaurant had top level service, and very tasty food. We were with a range of adult ages, and we all loved the food and adored the level of service. Our waiter was local (from Maldon) and charming.

My only advice to the owners would be to smarten the car park, gardens and reception, as the first impression was weeds and a tired reception.

Visited on 10th November with Partner and Son and was very impressed. Nice decor, nice atmosphere, although it was not busy there was still ambiance and a good intimate feel. The food was excellant, although cheesecake not biscuit base - my partner is a cheesecake fanatic!
We eat out at least once a month around Chelmsford and Writtle and this meal was excellant in taste, presentation and value for money.
Our Waiter, who was Romanian, was excellant, very attentive without being obtrusive and knew how to treat his customers. A lovely experience.
We are booking here for Christmas Day and looking forward to it.
I definately recommending giving this restaurant a go.

We had a beautiful 3 course meal here for Valentines. There was plenty of choice on the menu and 2 complimentry courses in between. Fillet steak was superb and so was the dessert! Realised the following day on the receipt that we'd been chargesd for drinks that we didn't order, but oh well. The atmosphere needs improving as it was very quiet in there, but I would still recommend this place : )
