Owner description: Situated near Aldeburgh, in the beautiful coastal region of Suffolk, The Long Shop Museum tells the story of more than 200 years of the town's life and work. In the museum you will find a staggering collection of objects, ranging from full-size steam engines (the Richard Garrett & Sons engineering business made many hundreds of steam engines here) to touching mementos of the lives of the working people of the town.

This museum is housed in the old Garrett engineering works and tells the story basically, of the Garrett family and its engineering history. There is lots about steam engines, and agricultural machinery, but lots more besides. It's well laid out with a huge number of exhibits and a lot of printed information.

The ticket price entitles you to return as many times as you like for a year.

We saw the brown sign for this museum when driving through area so decided to pay a visit & we were very glad we did. Lots of items very well laid out & with informative notes. The gentleman in the shop was helpful. Bonus is the entry ticket lasts for a year!

My niece and nephew love going to museums and I try to find new ones to visit each year. I had a look at the website and thought there would be plenty to do and my niece especially would love it due to the clothing she could dress up in. There was one dress and a white apron to dress up in which were both very shabby and the dress looked like a modern day one! A lot of the puzzles and things to play with to show how things used to work were very worn and really need replacing. We were actually shouted at as we went into the traveller caravan. There was no sign to say do not enter and no rope across it but apparently we should have known not to go in as there were only 2 steps up into it and not the usual 3!!! How would we be expected to know this?! Very rude!!! The man on the entrance till was very keen for us to try an ice-cream from the new freezer they had had delivered that very morning. I said maybe later but then as we were leaving he came running out after us to say you need to buy one. The entrance tickets are valid for free return visits for up to a year but this is not a place I would ever visit again and would recommend people not to do so either. Very disappointing.

The Long Shop tells so many interesting tales of Leiston, Garretts, engineering, and the women's suffrage movement. Garretts would make almost anything out of metal.

I have always been a fan of steam engines and Garrett has featured in that interest so I was pleased when on holiday in Suffolk to be able to visit the Long Shop, though the name, whilst pertinent to those in the know, was not easily recognisable as being about Garrett. Perhaps a rethink needed? Perhaps "Garrett's Long Shop" for the uninitiated?

There was ample parking on site but you must then seek out the ticket office near the road entrance.

There was a great deal to absorb and the timeline regarding the advent and development of steam was very well portrayed. Also the steam engine valve arrangements and working models were well done and informative.

Don't miss anything as the various displays are a bit random. Maybe the Lottery Money upgrade may address this.

Excellent three hours and very educational.
