“Perfect introduction to the Arctic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 September 2011

I stayed here with my family (2 adults, two teens and a pre-teen) for one night before our Arctic cruise, and for one night after the cruise was over, on our way home.
The entire family really liked this hotel, especially the people who worked here. Everyone went out of their way for all the guests, especially Venka at reception.

We were there in July/August, so the outside temperatures were around 7°C and sunny (we were lucky) - but the hotel was cozy and warm and had excellent underfloor heating, which I could imagine is much needed in winter. The rooms are not luxurious but they have everything one needs, the food was really good in the restaurant, and internet access in the rooms on one's own computer, or in the lobby on the computer provided by the hotel was no problem at all. The lounge and bar area is very warm and cozy, and dates from the 1950's - there is a make-it-yourself pancake bar at 3 in the afternoon - wonderful!
We also loved it that shoes are removed at the front door; sliding up and down the hallways is super fun. I also thought the prices weren't as high as I had expected, since Spitsbergen is part of Norway which is a country known to be expensive.

This hotel is (like everywhere else) a short walk from the settlement and because it sits on a bit of a hill, the views are nice too.

We will definitely go back.

We stayed at Spitsbergen Hotel for four nights in June 2011.

The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. There's a TV in the room but it's very small. There were blackout curtain that did a pretty good job (not 100% though) so there was no trouble sleeping during the midnight sun. Since there is a Svalbard tradition to take off your shoes when you enter a building, including the hotels, it's advisable to bring your own slippers to use while at the hotel.

The sauna area is small but nice (separate saunas for men/women) and heated from sometime in the afternoon. There is also a massage chair, a gym and free towels. By the bar at the reception there is a self-service station where you can make your own waffles between 4 and 6pm; and there is free coffee and tea 24/7 (self-service), which can be enjoyed in a cosy, turn of the century setting. The breakfast buffet is surprisingly large and the four course dinner that we had in the restaurant was excellent.

The over all service is very good and the staff is very friendly and service minded. There is free internet access all over the hotel, but the wifi reception is best in the lobby (and actually very bad in most? of the rooms). In the lobby there is also a computer that you can use for free. Updated weather reports are posted in the lobby.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Spitsbergen Hotel!

Room Tip: Some rooms are facing Longyearbyen, some a dull mountain side

Stayed 7 nights in a junior suite. Nice, clean room with a small livingroom, overlooking city, harbour and mountains. Bathtub, minibar, TV etc. Nothing luxuriously, but very fine.

Staff were friendly and extremely helpful answering questions and planning activities.

Good breakfast with lots of choices.

A hotel with great historical atmosphere - don´t forget to enjoy your coffee and waffles in the chesterfield-furnished area with an old book :-)

We stayed for two nights in this utterly charming and historically fascinating hotel. The room was a suite, breakfast was fantastic and every afternoon between 4 and 6 fresh waffles with coffee is served in the cosy bar. Beautifully positioned overlooking the town, it is but a short walk to the upper 'suburbs' or down to the centre of town. A couple of power-cuts during our second evening was masterfully dealt with by unflappable candle-wielding staff. We can't wait to return.

Stayed for just one night. Nice, very clean room, okay bed and a great duvet. Location is to the back of the town, but since Longyearbyen is a very, very small place its not a problem.
Very cozy common areas with wood panels, chesterfield sofas and a huge fireplace.

Would stay there again.
