First impression, fabulous. I've been very critical about the other two Elgin hotels we stayed at on this trip and for very good reasons. This is without doubt the best of their portfolio; for a start it has windows with a view of the garden, you'll have to go up to the monastery at the top of the hill for a mountain range view. There is traffic noise or should I say those damn horns and dogs barking nearby. Our room, 54, is a deluxe with a small sitting area, the bathroom lets it down badly, it desperately needs up-dating but it's adequate. The now famous grubby stair carpet, a feature of all Elgin's is to found here too, instead of brushing try shampooing! Lunch. The most jaw dropping beautiful dining room we've ever seen in India, and the food is excellent, though they need to work on the chicken dish, less bone more meat. The staff are the best of all the Elgin's we've stayed at. It's location is within walking distance of the centre. Wifi can only be got in the reception area, a small price to pay as its free. We liked this place.

Room Tip: You need to ensure you get a room overlooking the garden, which faces east and you'll get the dr...

I hd been to Silver Oaks with my family from Jan 15th-17th . I had a lot of fun at this place. Just loved the design and architecture of the place. The hotel is quite grand and polished. They have a pretty hospitable staff.

It was a 8 day tour to Darjeeling , gangtok , peling & Kalimpong. It was very well executed by Antilog Vacations , our travel agent.Their representative picked us from Baghdogra airport & this hotel was our 3rd halt.Right from start till the end , we got fabulous services at cheap rates .Choosing a good agent is crucial as u can't really trust the local agents owing to some insurgency problems here sometimes (wont dig into the issue)

When we reached the hotel we were greeted very nicely. felt very special. They appeared very graceful and very well coordinated as if each one knew their job very well and had a good idea of what would follow next. It ws as if al of thm were positioned ,ready to deliver bt waited fr the right moment. The manager gave us a complimentary gift on arrival. It ws sweet gesture.

Rooms

Later we were shown our rooms. Rooms are good, grand and old styled..like those in the era of British India. Woods and planks and paintings of historic shades were on display at ths place. I liked the feel of olden times. Even the staff ws dressed in the attire of classic helpers in servitude. It ws nice.

To modernise it they had nice complimentaries and I got a variety of delicious sweets and desserts. It ws all so so good. The rooms had decent smell some aroma sprayed. The quality of rooms was good. Double bed , table, chair, intercom all the stuff was present

Food

The staff ws nice. Focussed. The food ws also nice. Good variety to eat. It ws a nice dining place. Bright lit corridors, the hallway. The rooms and dinning area, it had soecial lamps and well decorated s tuff. The interiors wer also nicely done. Quite simple and nice at the same tym. Nthn too pricey bt the feel of belonging to a different period gave it a very precious look overall. They places around also wer nice. If u get tym u shuld definitely have a look at the nearby religious places. The staff wil guide u properly. I ws there only fr a day so missed visiting the neighbourhood.

I must say that it was excellent services that made our stay here memorable

Wonderful place to stay in. I was there on the 4th of Feb, 2012 to 6th of Feb 2012. The staff are wonderful. Nothing is too much trouble for them.

It IS expensive but in my reckoning, a worthy expenditure. I travelled from Kolkata to Kalimpong by road most of which didn't exist as they were so bad. The hotel was a wonderful little break from the horror of the road.

2 days of pure luxury. When you do go, make sure to take the all meals paid plan as the eating out options are very limited in town. That was a mistake I made.

I stayed in Room number 59. A corner room but over the dining hall. There was a function in the dining hall and loud music was played which made the room vibrate. Complaining to the reception reduced the noise for a little while. Then the drunken revellers overcame their inhibitions and the noise was back again. Fortunately the noise stopped at 9:30PM.

Room Tip: I stayed in Room number 59. A corner room. The room has a good view.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Elgin Silver Oaks was built in 1930 and once belonged to the prominent architect Frederick Desraj who built the old Teesta Bridge. It is now converted into a luxury hill resort in the Himalayas. Lounging in the landscaped gardens in a profusion of colour, one is treated to breathtaking views of the Himalayas. The natural decor is characteristic in the imposing Kanchenjungha which can be seen on a clear day, blooming petunias and asters, the serrated violet edges of iris, iridescent butterflies flitting through colourful azaleas, drooping geraniums, proud orchids and heaven, temporarily descends on earth. Sitting in one of the quaint gazebos, the tea seems to be flavoured by the refreshing winds of the Himalayas. ... more   less
