We accidentally visited the fort and were glad that we did. Met Mr. Shanmugam, the caretaker. I was surprised by the knowledge he had about the fort. He explained about the interesting cravings in the tombstones, in the 400 years old cemetery, which are still intact. It was really nice to learn about history of the place. Its a small fort, but very clean and well maintained. Worth a visit.
Its a dutch fort full got ruined..
Its located at sadras near Kalpakkam.
Better skip it There is nothing there to spend your time
We decided to visit this dutch fort as it was not popular known. This place is currently under the maintenance of government and renovations are currently being done. So much of work needed to be done to preserve this fort. There is a goverment appointed staff living in this fort who has the key to this fort and the the dutch cemetery in this fort. He is also friendly and able to show u papers about the history of this fort. Apparently, this fort used to be an important place in Tamil Nadu where manufacturing of Muslim clothes was done here during early 16th century by Dutch people. Worth visiting for their history!
Sadras Dutch fort is in Kalpakkam - around 60 kms from Tambaram and 16 kms from Mahabalipuram. The ruined fort is under ASI currently. The Sadras fort was used as granary by Dutch for commercial purposes. The place is clean however, it is almost maintained not so well with so many bushes and shrubs all around unlike other ASI maintained monuments. The fort also has a cemetery with many graves in it.
Overall, a place to stop-by for a quick visit on the way to Pondicherry or when you are visiting Mahabalipuram.
Old dutch fort... Surely must have had lots of history but there is no signage... This means that you just walk in and walk out of the Fort with a few photo opportunities.... Would have been nice if we had a bit more detailing on the history. The cemetery remains closed so can only see if from the gate... Some pleasant views of the beach from the fort. If you really have nothing else to do - go here. Hat is a must carry.
Very safe though
South of Mahabalipuram near Kalapakkam is the place where it is located.
It is poorly maintained & not promoted as ahistorically significant place. There are couple of granaries, kitchen & cemetry, ruins of a jail and prayer room. These are not easily identifiable. Close to beach & great view.
As of date, no charge is being levied, but it should be charged as more employees required to maintain & promote this fort. No essential facilities exist such as toilet, seats, etc.
Overall - Definitely worth a visit though it is short.
