“Colonial Charm”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 February 2012

Fantastic Place to Stay in Puri. The old colonial charm of the hotel makes it a unique place to stay. Really good rooms - nice and spacious. Very very reasonably priced including breakfast. Courteous Staff - fantastic food. Dont think there is a better place to stay in Puri. Considering the price, it is kings luxury.

Room Tip: Rooms on the first floor have a very good view of the sea.

Stayed at BNR Chanakya in Jan 2011. This is a heritage property with the heritage excellently maintained. The room was not 5 star, but for what I paid for it, it exceeded all my expectations. A good clean three star room with all facilities clean and in good working conditions. Bathrooms were clean and functional. Service by the staff and in the restaurant was also very good. Each room was themed along the princely railways of British India and we got the Ramnagar state themed room. As mentioned by one of the other reviewers, "BNR is a successful merging of bygone era and clean modern bathrooms, powerful mold-free Acs, and hot water kettle". Couldn’t have said it any better.

We had dinner at the restaurant which was very tasty. Our room also included breakfast. We had the buffet breakfast on the first morning. The breakfast was good. However on the next morning we had to leave early to take the Rajdhani express from Bhubaneshwar. I asked for a packed breakfast and that was some upma packed up. To my rude shock I got charged an extra 250 rupees for it. Normally in all the hotel I have been in, if the room includes breakfast, you are not charged extra for packed breakfast. Here no one told me about the extra charge. I was asked to cough up just after breakfast was given. How disappointing. While 5AUD is not a huge amount, it is the question of something wrong and right. Guess these small nasty surprises are also a part and parcel of the otherwise fantastic experience called Incredible India.

Had I not been overcharged for breakfast, would have rated this hotel very good.

Room Tip: Make sure you know what is exactly included in room tarrif. You might pay extra for things which are...

I went back for second time after a gap of twelve years to this rail heritage hotel because i liked it during my first visit. It has been renovated nicely which was badly required. But also lost some of its tradition. Still it was a nice experience. Its location is its strongest point. You can see the waves crashing right from your room on first floor. Rooms are huge and with a wide balcony. The hotel is full of nice, old photographs. Has beautiful and well maintained lawns. Food is excellent. Housekeeping could have been better though.

Room Tip: Go for first floor rooms for great view. If you can check into one of the Royal Saloons, nothing lik...

A beautiful, neat and clean hotel with Puri beach view from the balcony..Room size is so huge with such a beautiful painting of Indian railways hanging around and having a King size bathroom. It can beat any 5 star hotel I can say.
Room service was excellent so was the food which we ordered during our 2 days of stay, You can walk down to the Puri beach early morning to see the sun rise which is just 8-10 mins away from the hotel. Jaganath temple is also close by and takes 15 minutes to reach by rickshaw.
Hotel has a huge garden in front which gives a very pleasent feeling and add good looks to the hotel and one can enjoy watching the greenery and beach view from the balcony.

Room Tip: Beach view room (but I think all rooms had beach view)

BNR is a successful merging of bygone era and clean modern bathrooms, powerful mold-free Acs, and hot water kettle (no fridge). Old photographs of Indian Railway construction cover the walls and every room opens onto a huge verandah facing the sea (An empty lot and road separates the property from the beach). Shame that the larger public sitting rooms remain closed but there is a ping pong table on the veranda. Hotel staff was helpful in arranging reasonably priced car transport and directing us to a quiet, clean Forest Service beach north of town. The fish and prawn dishes are superb although oddly, one must eat in one's room if wishing to enjoy a glass of wine with your food. BNR is a no-alcohol hotel which seems out of context for it's refined ambiance. In fact, if you want to enjoy wine on your holiday, bring a bottle from Bubeneshwar as options are slim in Puri! I visited all other plausible hotels in Puri and BNR is the best for a two or three night escape!

Room Tip: First floor has the best view of the sea!
