I have been to Puri more than 50 times since 1975,and have stayed in almost all the known hotels. Puri hotel was undoubtedly a famous name and destination amongst Bengali middle class at some point in time, but sadly it has remained so and no better.
Although almost every staff apart from the cook tries very hard to make an impression with the guests, sadly the management's lackadaisical attitude and impertinence in terms of behavior with all guests is glaring. The management, especially the people sitting at Reception has an attitude, as if they are the Chief Minister or the District Collector of Puri. They simply don't care, and I strongly feel, that the owners of the Hotel has the same attitude, just because people doesn't have a place to stay, during peak season, and Puri hotel is almost always full.
Make no mistake about this, that Puri Hotel is almost always full because of its quality of service, food etc, but because of its excellent location and relatively cheap rooms, compared to other modern hotels which are coming up,all over Puri.
The guards, the porters, the bus driver and conductor, the lift operator, almost all of them are decent and courteous. But the cook is possibly the worst amongst all the cooks in Puri. The quality of food and taste are atrocious and most annoying, but sadly I have seen loads of people gorging on that same food, during peak season, as other hotel options are expensive.
Menu options are very limited too.
These is a typical hotel if you have a very modest budget. The quality of rooms, even in their tall building at the front, are very very ordinary and without AC. The service is poor, and the porters themselves asked us to avoid Puri hotel during peak season,as they themselves confirmed that service becomes pathetic from poor as because they become more busy during peak season, just imagine !!
The elevator doesn't off course go all the way up.One has to climb to the top two floors,in the tall building.
The only two redeeming factors are the amount of early evening wind you get in your face during March-April in the top few floors in the tall building at the front and Puri Hotel's extreme proximity to the Sea. It also has a regular private bus service to the Railway station for most major trains.
I wouldn't personally stay at Puri Hotel again or even recommend this place to anybody, its that terrible. Food would be 0/10, service - 2/10,comfort 1/10,I mean its simply awful, although its always crowded !!
