Stayed in a beautifully designed wooden cottage overlooking the lake. But don't go by the location and the room. This place is worthless for the price. It's a complete rob off. One gets terribly bored seeing the hills and lake from a distance in just three hours. The peak summer season sees no water in Umiam lake. It's almost dry. There is absolutely nothing else to do. You may want to doze off after a hearty meal, which is decent quality and copious quantity. But there is no a/c in the rooms, even when temp. is 35 degrees in a sunny summer afternoon. There are stand fans. But beware. There are power cuts; and the resort doesn't bother for a backup arrangement unless you ask them so.
What's the point paying a five star rate when you have to get up from sleep well past midnight asking them to get the stand fan work, mosquito repellant work, lights and lamp work? I called up the reception around 2 am to know why there was no power supply in the cottage. No one picked up the call. I waited for nearly 30 mins., and when I couldn't take it (mosquitoes, insects, heat) anymore, I decided to take a walk in complete darkness (not a light outside premium cottages). There was nobody at reception, and they apparently don't take calls at night. Came back to room climbing up stairs in blinding night. Called up the resort manager on his cell, and the power came. Pathetic.
There is a jacuzzi in the bath, but water too, like power, is rationed. You will have to ask them to switch on water, if you need. They will oblige. My take on this property is that, if you really can't live without visiting them, then don't go for cottages. Take regular rooms; keep your expectations low, stare blankly at hills and dry lake, eat a lot, gain weight, come back unhappy.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Ri Kynjai translates into Khasi as land of serenity. This Spa-Resort presiding over the picturesque Umiam lake 16kms from Shillong is aptly named "Ri Kynjai - Serenity By The Lake". The architecture is inspired and derived from the original Khasi thatch huts. Supported on tall circular stilts on the terrace of the hotel blocks are the hybrid cottages derived from vernacular Khasi architecture. These cottages serve to portray the transition from tradition to modernity and have an interpretation of the traditional upturned boat roof done in metallic thatch fused to modern gables. Each cottage has a fireplace in the living/ bedroom area and the mezzanine floor has an additional bedroom arrangement. ... more less
