“Old World Shabby - [not quiet] Chic Charm”
Reviewed 12 April 2012

As in the reviews immediately below the hotel is slightly worn; with mismatched furniture from various periods in the life of the hotel. The towels are not fluffy and hot water is only available for 3 hours in the morning. The rooms are spotless; which quite frankly given the red dust in Matheran, is a feat of genius.

However, there is a real charm about the building and the owners are simply delightful. The food is really quiet excellent - who new that tomato and egg consommé soup was so delicious. We had our meals served at our table and we could have as much as we needed. Although I understand on busy days meals are by buffet. Portions were very generous and we didn’t need seconds.

We had a valley view room; whcih consisted of a 'sun room' bedroom and very pink shower/toilet room. The view from our room across the valley was simply stunning. The staff brought tea [7am to 8am] which we sipped in the sun room watching the monkeys on the terrace, before feasting on breakfast [8:30am to 10:30am]. We looked at the other hotels in the town and decided that Lords really was the nicest.

We had to leave very early and had sandwiches wrapped up in brown paper ties with string – a lovely touch which sums up the old world charm of the property.

We stayed here in March 2011. The ride up the hill in the 'toy train' is fun. On arrival you have to the hotel as there is no transport allowed. Porters are available if you want. The hotel has been there for 3-4 generations and still run by the same family, Mr. Lord will tell you the historywhile you fill in the required documentation. The rooms need serious renovation, I guess if you are a backpacker this is acceptable but for the price I expected much more than I got. Electricity is a problem as was water! The saving grace was the food, it was fantastic and plenty of it, as much as you could, they even made us fish and chips not knowing we prefer Indian food. Great walks and breath taking views, so much history if you find the old graveyard and quarinteen station in this old British Hill Station. Very interesting and worth a visit.

We stayed at the Lords Central for one night, after reading reviews in Lonely Planet, during a recent trip to India.
When we arrived, by hand cart-great fun- we were welcomed and shown to our valley view room which had views to die for! You feel you have stepped back in time when you first enter your accommodation but everything is clean, tidy and comfy. The attached verandah area, with a variety of seating, was a perfect place to relax and unwind in the evening and an ideal location to watch the sunrise in the morning.
The food at the Lords was some of the best we had in India and was all freshly prepared and arrived in quantity with a good variety too.
On our departure we met Mrs Lord and I can only say that you would find it hard to meet a more charming, interesting and knowledgable lady who is truly passionate about Matheran and preserving its peace for future generations, we could have talked her for hours!
We would not hesitate to stay at Lords Central again and would recommend anyone else to try it.

My parents and I are regular Matheran visitors but stayed for the first time in Lords Central Hotel. Since we reached there on an off season friday morning, we were very generously offered, without asking for the same, two rooms for the price of one. This helped form a very favourable first impression.

The hotel itself is charming with an old world feel to it. The grounds are well maintained, The pool is clean with flowering plants around it. As for the rooms, there is absolute cleanliness, the sheets, towels were spotless, the bathroom was clean. But yes the furniture is quite old and shows its age. The room is not luxurious. On the contrary it is very basic. The solar heated hot water is available only in the mornings.. But we did not mind the simple furnishings. The view of the valley from our room sitout made up for it all.

The quality of food was good. Since there were few guests in the hotel, there was no buffet but the food was served directly on the table. Here we felt the service lacked enthusiasm. Otherwise the staff were all friendly with a ready smile. The personal touch of the owners was very evident in the upkeep of the hotel.

The hotel is located centrally and is a stone's throw from the market but at the same time, once you enter the premise, there is absolute peace. This place is not for those who crave loud music, rain dances and flashy entertainment. It is for those who wish to see beautiful sunrises from the hotel itself, its for those who wish to play carrom, table tennis, badminton, life size chess with family and friends, its for those who wish to read a book overlooking a gorgeous valley.

Yes, we had a wonderful stay and would love to come back again.

I chose Lords after reading reviews on various websites. We had too short a time with us and hence after finding out from their Mumbai office on availability of rooms - we decided to barge in directly without booking (Won't personally recommend travel without booking). The owners were kind enough and though we had reached late accommodated us and our requests.
The property is cosy with individual houses having its own verandah. All basic facilities are well managed. Would recommend Valley View (if available).
Food is excellent and served on specific times at a central dining hall for all guests. Dining togather provides opportunity for networking with the guests and helps to find and give more information of what possibilities can be explored, costs etc.
Beware of monkeys who are capable of snatching food so be watchful - specially if you are travelling with children.
