“Scenic!! Helpful Staff and Lip Smacking Food!!”
Reviewed 6 September 2016

I went to Matheran with 3 of my friends and we are glad to have chosen Westend for the stay. Overall experience was really good. the highlight was their food and hospitality. For example, at Breakfast time there were a few mosquitoes roaming around (which is quite common in dense forest places). The staff was quick to notice our inconvenience and they placed mosquito coils near our chairs.

The hotel is also very well located with a few points quite close to it. I would definitely recommend Westend Hotel for stay in Matheran.

We just came back from a great trip from Matheran! Very helpful staff and ensured we were comfortable including my two and a half year old son. He had a great time and the staff ensured his food was taken care. Decent place to stay just wish the room was a bit bigger. Food was good just hope they had a better lunch spread!

Overall, this is a nice place to relax and have some quality time with your family and friends.

It is a small resort located near the police station about 10 minutes walk ahead of where the market ends. It is suitably located - not too far from the market and not too deep inside the wilderness. Adjacent to the resort, there are pathways leading to the Charlotte lake and a few other points of interest. Charlotte lake (a must see place) is about 20 minutes walk from the resort with some degree of sloping paths.

Within the resort, there are facilities of swimming pool, table tennis, badminton court, and a play area for children with swings and slides. Swimming pool is of decent size but is not temperature controlled. It is nicely maintained but is surrounded by living and dining areas. The resort also organises games and DJ nights almost daily and are fun to partake in.

The rooms (Superior AC deluxe) that we stayed in are not too luxurious but are of normal size. They come with a king size double bed, side tables, tea/coffee maker, a sofa cum bed, LCD TV and DTH connection, phone, split AC and a small cupboard. The bathroom is also of normal size and is provided with basic toiletries and bath towels. The sofa doubles up as a huge bed on the floor and is very good for families with kids.

Our room was on the first floor overlooking the central courtyard. The rooms have common verandah where lounge table and chairs are kept outside every room. These are comfortable and come in handy for morning tea and evening snacks and drinks amongst the unending and sometimes enjoyable ruckus created by the bandar log (the monkeys).

The best feature of the hotel is the food (as almost all reviews confirm). We had taken the all meals plan as we did not want to forage for food with kids in rains. The variety of food is large and both veg and non veg preparations are generally tasty. The meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are served as buffet and are well stocked. We stayed two days and nights and were always pleased with the variety and service. For food and drinks (no bar facility) that are needed besides the buffet meals, there is room service and the prices of the items are quite reasonable. The service is very prompt and professional.

A bit about Matheran itself. Supposedly, it is the smallest hill station in India and the only automobile-free one in Asia. To reach Matheran from Neral, there are plenty of taxis available from the railway station that charge (INR 70) per seat. The car ride is for about half hour and the drop off is at Dasturi point, which is an entry point to Matheran (2.5 kms away) and also has the public car parking (charged). At this check point, one has to also pay the municipal fee at a window counter to enter Matheran. This is a pretty chaotic spot, as the moment one alights here, coolies, horse owners, and hand-cart owners start approaching you for coaxing you to accept their services. They will make false claims about the terrain and the distance to the hotels in Matheran. We were told that the climb is very steep and thus we should opt for horses and hand-carts. They will point to billboards listing their official fees. You may still haggle with them and bring down the charges a bit. And if you walk past the check point, a hundred meters or so away, you will find more horses and hand-carts with their owners and they quote much lesser for the same services. Overall, it is not a very nice way to begin one’s holiday. The truth is that the climb to Matheran is very simple and not exhausting if you are in decent shape. If you carry your belongings in a backpack, you can even cover the distance without the help of any coolie or horse. Once you get through all this circus, the natural beauty of Matheran allows you plenty of peace. At least whatever the monkeys allow you.

We stayed in AC Deluxe room. Room was clean, but felt that it was small. Bathroom was also small but clean and neat. Dressing table is available. Coffee maker is also available. They provide coffee powder, tea bags also. There is a big balcony provided with good view of the hotel garden. Teapoy and chairs were also available but could not use it because of the monkeys around. They will be ready to enter your room if you open the window. But this is common to all the places/hotels in Matheran. Room was small but the resort is so big with greenery everywhere. We saw a  Badminton court as well. Meals was included in the plan. Food was good but not excellent as I read the other reviews. Non veg was not that good especially if you are a Hyderabadi. Swimming pool was also available. It was clean, but did not use as it was raining on that day and we did not had much time. I recommend you to stay in Matheran at least two days to view many places. Hotel is located 4 Kms away from Dasturi car point. Horse ride will cost you around 500 per person to Hotel . Luggage will cost you around 300. By walk , it’s like trekking, you can explore some places on the way to hotel.
