Great location, and nice food

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 May 2011
We stayed for over 4 days in Barefoot for our honeymoon. I would say the location is indeed the best! Hardly less than an kilometer walk from the awesome Radhanagar beach.

I loved the natural setting in rooms, which are completely wooden and with AC. Though some people can not handle that, because in an ecological setting you might get ants or lizards in room. If you keep room closed when you go out and in evenings, my guess is nothing more than Ants would turn up.

Now the food & staff. Food, even for Indian traveler was good. I didn't really expect so good Indian food as well great continental food. The staff is quite friendly, some of them over friendly I would say :) :)

The manager is helpful, but little bit seems business minded, which is ok.
I would highly recommend this place if you love natural settings, and want good food along!

After reading such great reviews on trip advisor we had high hopes for this resort. We stayed in an Andaman villa, which to be fair, was very romantic, but unfortunately not very clean. The canopy above the shower was full of leaves and scum, so you couldn't actually see the rainforest! And we were sharing it with a rat ( who was probably more scared of us though).

You should probably expect noise being in the middle of the jungle- I don't mind birds or crickets but it was the frogs that made a terrible racket starting at 3 am every morning - perhaps it was mating season? Bring ear plugs!!

The restaurant is nice and cosy and the staff are friendly and attentive. The Italian food is great, the Indian food not so much- disappointing for a European who had come to taste the local cuisine...

The bar is lovely and has great music and ambiance especially at night. Super nice bar staff!

In general staff were always friendly but service was quite slow ("laid back "?)- particularly when ordering food in the bar ( which has to come all of 50 yards from the restaurant kitchen) or when asking for beach towels, repairs or rat catchers :)

However, the stunning beach and adjoining forest more than makes up for this. It is just such a shame that somehow it feels this resort is not reaching it's full potential. This place would be outstanding with stronger management and clever recruitment.

Unlike five star resorts, Barefoot at Havelock does not provide a swimming pool, tennis court, or even internet, for that matter. However what it does offer is a small piece of paradise. We live in China and every year travel for two winter months & two summer months to different locales. After visiting Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Mongola, and Thailand....many times, we stumbled on the perfect spot for this year's winter vacation.

My initial reaction to our cabin was - what, no view! Here we were on one of the world's best beaches and we couldn't see it from the resort. Unlike all of the hectic and cheek by jowl resorts on the eastern side of the island, Barefoot sells its customers more - - jungle, wildlife, seclusion, a two minute walk to the beach, and the world's best sunsets. As amateur birdwatchers we filled a good part of our mornings and late afternoons on our own private deck with our binoculars & the resort's bird book. Turndown service is a complete tucking in of the mosquito net around the four-poster bed and a quick tidy of the room. Never saw a mozzie in the room, though and outside they were only a bother for about an hour just at sunset. The cabins are constructed of what looks like dark hardwood with thatched roofs - the bathrooms are generously sized with a large walk-in shower with glass roof. All very top notch.

The bar is open, cozy, well stocked, and a place to meet other guests from almost anywhere. The dining room, not what you would call "fine dining", was charming and offered a great selection of fare - we always had the Indian breakfast of the day and always local cuisine for dinner - fresh, thoughtfully prepared and presented. The seafood specials were always whatever came in that morning. A tiny spa tucked into the jungle provided a wonderful oil massage one evening - another bonus.

John, the front end manager, helped always with suggestions, was always there when needed, and provided just that extra sense of fun - his wife, Julie, even fitted me with a sari!

Take advantage of the snorkelling (or diving) options offered - the other islands are worth seeing. We kayaked one day and rented a scooter for about half of the twelve days we spent at the resort. The island is worth exploring from top to bottom - villages, farming, harvesting, people, animals, markets, fishing, hiking, cycling, and more kingfishers than I've ever seen.

Of all of the places we've visited in Asia over the past four years Barefoot is one place we would definitely consider for a return. Amazingly, we did not get to see everything.

After traveling for 4 weeks through India we decided to treat ourselves to comfort and were not dissapointed. We had the most simple accommodation, Nicobari villa. It turned out to be great. High build quality, good maintenance and cleaning, so nothing to wish for in the rooms. The service is great, bar and restaurant serve good cocktails and food and the surroundings are the best in the world.

Room tip: Don't spend extra on luxurious villa's.

Yes, this is what a travel agent in Andaman & Nicobar told us,when we were planning our holiday in Feb. He suggested so ,as at Barefoot u have no T.V.,no telephone, no room service in ur room. But believe me if ur staying at Radhanagar beach u do not need any distractions. Good sense prevailed ,and a friend of mine who had stayed here earlier strongly suggested to stay only at Barefoot.
I also had a chance to see all the other Hotels in Havelock, also the ones with so called sea view(Barefoot is not sea facing). I suggest u can stay their only if (A) U do not want to enter the water (B) U want to watch T.V. in ur room (3) U want to enjoy drinks in the garden in front of ur room. But if ur fun loving and also an Indian, Barefoot is for u .
The one thing i really felt cheated were the transfers (to and fro from Port Blair). I paid Rs 18000/ for two families in a Govt. ferry. I found out that i could have done the same for Rs 5000. This being an off season ,the ferry tickets are easily available on the same day also and does not require advance booking of 3-4 days as suggested to me Rohit.

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for your feedback and we are pleased to know that you had a memorable stay with us. We would also like to highlight that Barefoot at Havelock is a perfect place for anyone who is looking for a memorable and offbeat holiday irrespective of the nationality.
We are unable to source your booking details and hence cannot confirm if you opted for transfers from us or if you have booked through your agent as mentioned by you in the opening line.

We provide two options of transfers by Govt ferry and another by Makruzz; if you were a family of 8 then Rs 5000 would just cover cost of the Govt ferry tickets from PB- Havelock- PB. Our transfer package includes airport pick up and drop and all internal transfer from the jetty to the resort and return transfer back to the Port Blair hotel and finally drop to the airport. If you have indeed booked transfers through us do send us a email directly so that we can check and provide you a break-up of our costs.

It could be that your agent has charged your extra or may have included other transfers in the mentioned cost.

Look forward to welcoming you back soon.

The Management Team,
Barefoot at Havelok

We stayed at the Barefoot Havelock in February 2011. The hotel is located on a quiet part of the island, cleverly designed rooms are located in the jungle, only a short walk from the receptions/restaurant and 2km almost deserted FANTASTIC white sandy beach. No internet access, no telephones, no tv, very limited mobile phone reception... bliss!

We stayed in a hut without AC - our Indian friends were horrified but it was fine - we visiting during 'dry season but the design of the hut cleverly discourages insects. Our room and indeed the rest of the hotel was very clean and comfortable. The staff are amazing - friendly, helpful.

If I were to criticize anything about the place it would be the food which after a while gets a bit boring (hotel is located away from other hotels and restaurants and it is pricey to get into town to try other places out). At breakfast, the toast was pretty bad (either completely dried out or not toasted at all). Based on the toast experience we decided not to try the Italian food/pizza however one of the American guests commented that it was the best pizza they had ever tasted so perhaps that was our loss!

All in all it really is one of those special places that we thought didn't think exist any more... despite the toast I would go back in a heart beat.
