We were in town for a competition for one night (4/20) along with alot of other families who were also there for competitions. We arrived around 8:00. Things looked great from the lobby and check-in for us was relatively quick but noticed a little later that the line was pretty long.
The first problem was encountered when we went to the Red Roof parking lot. We had been charged $10 per night to park. The desk clerk emphasized strongly not to go into the other attached lot and showed a diagram as to where and where not to go so we would not get confused. We go into the parking lot- amazingly enough there were no spots left. The lot was shaped like a "u" - if you went down one side there was no way to turn around. If you went down the other side, you were at the exit. When realizing there was no spots - you had to back up the length of the parking lot to go down the other side. I was unsure as to whether to exit the lot and park in the lot that we were instructed not to go in (tons of spaces there). I waited to see if anyone left - of course, no one was leaving - and others were coming in. So now we have have SUVs, cars and pickup trucks trying to manuever to find spots, backing up and not able to exit. I telephoned the front desk for suggestions for which I was placed on hold for 10 minutes (couldn't leave my car to go in and check personally). When they finally answered the call, they told me to park in the other lot and they would credit their parking fee. So why couldn't they just tell you the option either their lot for $10 or the other for $11, especially when they no they have a full house and there are not enough parking spaces to go around. Or could they just tell you "if the lot is full, you can park in the other and we will credit you". Actually, I preferred the other lot because there was more room to move your car around and park comfortably and it was well lit.
The other major problem was the continental breakfast, totally did not meet the needs of those staying there. Again, the hotel seemed full - could you plan for it? We went down at about 7:30am - there was nothing there except packets of oatmeal, apples and oranges. No coffee and the juice machine was working. Finally another guest informed us that the hostess just cleared everything and was restocking. Why did you take everything and not restock as you go? We had to wait at least 15 minutes for things to be brought out. Again, lots of hungry people counting on the convenience of the breakfast - that's why you stay at places like this. So then it was a feeding friendzy because many had been waiting - families, business people and most were in a hurry to get to what they came to Columbus for. The selections were prepackaged danishes and bran muffins, plain bagels and cream cheese. I am not going to complain about the selections but have had much better, my issue is with them not being able to have a plan to keep it stocked when the need was the greatest. Everything was pre-packaged so how difficult is it?
Our room was decent size except it seemed like it was missing furniture. There was a chair but a huge space were it looked like a table and chairs could have been there. We found the floors and bathroom clean. I found a "go green" placard under my pillow when we shut the lights off- it made me feel that perhaps my bed was not changed completely - I can't imagine leaving something like that under a pillow if everything was completely changed. There was considerable dust in the drawers and in the under sink cabinet. I told the desk that upon check out when they asked if the room was OK - she offered to comp the parking - oh yeah, couldn't be comped becaused we did not end up in their lot.
We will be back next year but we will not stay here. Also, have mentioned the experience to the event's organizers when asked for feedback for next years event.
