Description: Empress Taytu Ethiopian Restaurant offers a unique and flavorful dining experience. The traditions here are authentic, and all around you is the scenery, music, people, aromas, food, art, history, and culture of this ancient civilization. Optional traditional basket tables (mesobs) are in the huts (gojo bet) to fully experience Ethiopian cuisine and culture. Utensils are absent (unless otherwise requested), because in Ethiopia you eat with your hands by picking up your food with pieces of injera. Injera is the teff grain and wheat combination flatbread that will hold the various spiced meat and/or vegetable presentations known as 'wat's. There is a base layer of injera on which the 'wat' sits in your platter. More than half of our menu is vegan, and all of our entrées are gluten free (including a majority of the appetizers). Just remember to request the gluten free injera, which is made from 100% teff. The Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony is another experience we offer that makes Empress Taytu both unique and authentic. During this ceremony, we roast coffee beans from scratch and bring them out for you to see and smell. Then we grind the beans and brew your coffee the traditional Ethiopian way and serve your coffee in a handmade Ethiopian coffee pot (jebena) while burning frankincense. This is typically served after your meal to help cleanse your palate.

When ever my wife and I go to CCF or CWRU we plan to eat here. Service is always attentive and the food enjoyable. The owners are known to us and always greet us. Scottish flag of St.George and the St. George of Ethiopia are a clue to the wife and husband. Thanks for being part of our IMMIGRANT CONTRIBUTIONS . DRS MARTIN

This was my 4th time at empress Taytu but the first time I brought kids. Our teen girls loved the experience and devoured the food. We got a variety of items and ended with the coffee ceremony. Great food and great night for the whole family.

I've been here with friends and always enjoyed the food and drinks. You choose where you want to sit, a regular table or close to the floor with a bamboo table. If you have any questions, the waitress will explain the food to you. You can chose spicy, regular or both. Before the food is served you are given hot white washcloths to clean your hands, as they do NOT give you eating utensils. The times we went, we had our food on the same plate...which was a large circular flat bread on a pizza pan. They give you pieces of flat bread to pick up your food. Various choices, meats & veggies. Don't forget to order a drink, I'm sure you will want more than one.

I went here for a spur of the moment dinner with a friend one cold night. Having never had Ethiopian food (or more importantly, coffee) I didn't know what to expect. She arranged for the traditional seating, and we ordered. I was pleasantly surprised by the array of flavors and the unorthodox (at least to me) method of eating this delicious food. We got a bottle of the Sheba Tej wine along with dinner, which although on the sweet side was very pleasant. After dinner, we had the coffee ceremony as she knew I was a coffee aficionado, which I would highly recommend! Overall, it was a memorable and fun experience that I would recommend to anyone looking for something a little different on a lonely boring night.

A fabulous restaurant where you would never expect to find one! Empress Taytu is a hidden gem, nothing fancy, but more like you would find in Ethiopia, with incredible authentic food, expertly prepared. For those who have never tried this cuisine, it is an adventurous treat. From the Injera bread, to the varying degrees of spice, meat and vegitarian dishes, this place is not to be missed. For all who are fans of Ethiopian food, run , don't walk here. There is a good beer and wine list, limited, but good and reasonably priced also.
