We drove from Cairns and found it a long way to drive for just 2 things to thing to see - The Golden Gumboot and Sugar Mill. We didn't go over the sugar mill but were able to get photos of a display through the fence. The shops close early and there are only a couple of places to get something to eat. We found a bakery with a very quirky name called Pers 'n' Elle Bakery (owned by Percy & Ellen Jessop) that made up fresh sandwiches or rolls that were delicious.

The Golden Gumboot brilliantly sums up Tully's claim to fame in fun way - visually and physically - for people of all ages. Who couldn't resist a stretching the legs with a quick climb to the top for a photo opportunity. My visit was simply a pit stop en route to Cooktown and Tully's Golden Gumboot not only helped get my blood pumping again after the long hours sitting in the car, it told me the town's main point of interest and what I can expect weather-wise, should I return for longer stay sometime in the future.

Tulley is usually the wettest town in Australia with over 4m (160 in) of rain annually. As you leave the Bruce Hwy and come up Butler St you see this enormous Golden Gumboot standing 7.9m high. It was erected (2003) to celebrate the highest ever rainfall (1950) in Tully (and I gather to remind nearby Babinda that the rainfall record holder is Tully). Last time we were here everyone climbed up the internal staircase. This time, the boot lay on the ground. Yes, Babinda was wetter in 2016 (so holds the miniature golden gumboot for the year). No, the Babinda local, had not kicked it over. It was due for a clean-up and new coat of gold and will be reinstated in Aug 2017.
