Me and my husband had occasion to visit Thirsk in North Yorkshire.
I'd never heard of Thirsk before and didn't realise it's connection to horse racing but most people I've spoken to since our visit have heard of it.
We stayed for 1 night at 'Long Acre' a boarding house on Topcliffe Road.
Long Acre is like a home from home, it's a warm, comfortable, house and the owners, Mr & Mrs Dawson are very welcoming and friendly. There were lots of little extras in our room.
They also look after wild birds in their large garden. We were able to see two owls who have been in residence for some time, also there are hens and you can buy freshly laid eggs and home-made marmalade. We would definitely stay there again.
Thirsk itself is a lovely town well worth a visit, with lots of little interesting shops and places to eat. We dined at the 'Golden Fleece Hotel', the food and the atmosphere there are very good. The staff very courteous and friendly.
One surprising thing about the town was the cinema, there was a long queue of people waiting to get in when we passed. Maybe I need to get out more but I've not seen that for years.
