“Beautiful Facilities / Excellent Riding Centre”

The Equestrian Centre - Shardeloes Farm
Reviewed 14 July 2017

Several hundred acres of the most beautiful countryside available to hack out on. Great indoor facilities - well informed, helpful and capable staff - a real joy. Love every minute of being here.

I wrote a long & glowing review of Shardeloes in Dec 2015, which I feel I must now revise, as it may have become a bit misleading.

Don't get me wrong - the standard of instruction from Angela and Nancy remains extremely high and the facilities at the centre are largely unchanged. However, in the last 6 months, there has been almost 100% turnover in staff and the new management's philosophy/approach hasn't yet been clearly announced/explained to clients - or, if it has, I somehow missed it.

Some of the changes I have observed over the last few months, in addition to the loss of clear leadership/direction referred to above, include:
- the loss of a very jolly & cohesive yard team (no surprise perhaps, given the recent levels of staff turnover)
- I have recently had to point out potential safety issues with tack (stitching gone on a stirrup leather, safety bars raised on a saddle, missing neck strap) which I am confident would not previously have been allowed to occur
- small maintenance snags/glitches (eg leaks, dropped stable doors, broken rails) that used to be quickly resolved now seem to take weeks to sort out
- a general diminution in the variety & quality of horses available for lessons - there are lots of young cobby types but fewer horses suitable for BHS Stage 3
- I believe that the option to loan/share horses may be curtailed/ended

None of these developments is fatal and it may simply be a transient stage while the yard regroups under new leadership but, until things become clearer, I am uncomfortable with my previous unconditional recommendation of this yard. I would still recommend Shardeloes as a riding centre, but now with some reservations - particularly for more experienced clients and working pupils.

I plan to review the yard again in a few months, by which time I hope things will have settled back onto a more even keel.

Very easy to book on the website, a bit expensive. We were lucky with a sunny and not too windy day.

Shardeloes offer classes for all experiences and uniquely have a full sized mechanical horse if you want to try riding without the horse character thrown in. They are on the top of rolling hills with small forests on the side so great and varied hacking directly on the grounds traffic free. They take time to match your abilities to the right horse and you can decide if you want a class where you tack up the horse yourself "take back the reigns" lessons which is great if you want to build up this experience or just take extra time out with the horse before riding. Otherwise if you just want to get stuck into riding they do the usual saddle up and go lessons. There's unusually 2 toilets onsite cleaned often and one with shower that you can get changed in. A lovely large heated office with sofa's and drink and snack dispensers for anyone waiting before lessons, spare clothes if you need to borrow anything [boots, hats the whole shebang]. There's a large indoor ménage and several outdoor ménage with lighting so all weather day an night riding available. I'm an adult learner who got hooked in my mid-thirties with no natural ability but I find these guys are great at trying all sorts of tips and tricks to help you improve.

My daughter went their for a few year learning to ride and was very happy about. The staff is very friendly and instructors are very good. The environment is also quite relaxing.
