“Fantastic horses, facilities and staff”

The Equestrian Centre - Shardeloes Farm
Reviewed 13 August 2014

I was shocked by Quaxie's comment about the lack of things for advanced riders. Shardeloes has a great selection of horses for intermediate/advanced riders (they have staff training for BHS Stages 3 & 4) and, since I started riding there in March, I have received consistently fabulous instruction from Beth - varied, stretching & interesting but not at all patronising. Having ridden for over 25 years at various yards in Kent, Hampshire and Surrey (as I used to be a qualified riding instructor), I can honestly say their horses and facilities are miles better than at most of the BHS exam centres I have been to. The staff are all v friendly & helpful (especially Tracy on reception) and the whole place is run just as a yard should be - safely, efficiently and yet keeping a sense of fun. I guess Quaxie must just have had a bit of bad luck....

Daughter loves the place and is now an avid rider. Friendly, knowledgeable staff and fabulous surroundings ensure you can trot, canter or gallop while drinking in the scenery safe in the knowledge traffic is but a sound carried on the wind.

Shardeloes riding school is situated in a beautiful landscape and generally ok for beginners but doesn't have much to offer for more advanced riders. Most riding instructors are quite friendly but some of them seem to try and "kill time" rather than take a real interest in helping students make significant progress. It also seems that no group lessons are available on weekends at all and you have to book expensive individual lessons all the time. We found the place overall ok but decided to go elsewhere where we are much happier.

I first started to ride here about two years ago and loved it so much that I frequently have lessons. The yard is very clean (which is quite hard being surrounded by horses!) and the staff are very polite and helpful. The facilities are great, from a hydrotherapy spa to indoor and outdoor arenas and not to mention the 500 acre off road hacking. It is a beautiful location and all the horses look very well looked after.

Looking around for something to do with my six year old niece, I came across their website [--]

To book her lesson I sent an email and had a friendly and fast answer, covering expectations and kit hire. Having never had lessons she went on their mechanical horse for both instruction and assessment - half an hour later she was on a pony being led by Sharon who was informative but not critical. Whilst my niece was having her lesson I stayed behind at the yard and was impressed on how clean it was and how friendly both staff and riders were.

They have around 500 acres of off-road hacking - check out their website for comprehensive info.

Please note that it may seem a little expensive but due to the onset of a sueing culture all horse riding establishment's insurance has soared and I definitely feel it was worth every penny.
