We had been traveling around the big island for about a week and were coming from gloomy Volcano Village/Hilo in need of some sun and a real, bona fide beach. There are not that many nice, public beaches on the big island. A friend had described the Waipio Valley, and we decided to check it out. We were so taken with the beauty of the beach, the valley and friendly people that we completely changed our trip plans and started looking for places right there to stay.
There are not a lot of options in the area, but with fingers crossed we turned down a narrow driveway with a sign that said 'Guest Houses'. To say we were stunned is an understatement. These guest houses are perched very near the edge of the valley, with full views, and might have the greatest view from bed we've ever experienced. We stayed in the main guest house that has a kitchen, large sitting area, huge lanai, kind size bed, and even soaking tub. All of this faces the stunning valley views. Truly everything we look for.
The host Paula was so gracious too. She was super flexible with us as we had a late night flight out of Kona and didn't want to check out at 11 and lug our suitcases around for 12 hours. I know that we'll be coming back!
The only downside: the neighboring towns are unbelievably sleepy. We had a hard time finding a place that served beer! Your best bet is to go to the grocery store, load up on poke and wine and fill up the soaking tub back at Hale Kukui.
