I was excited to visit the ruins at Tulum and Secrets Akumal made the visit more pleasant. We were here during the hurricanes in October 2017 and chose to leave early to avoid the worst of the storms. The food was excellent and our room was very comfortable. One day, the beach service was poor, but the next day was superb. I don't have anything negative to say and I would feel comfortable recommending this resort.

This review is a little late as we stayed at Secrets Akumal for 2018 NYE. But I want to say that the NYE party they had was fabulous, from the entertainment to the food and great service.
The rooms are nice, we stayed in a preferred ocean front room, although at that hotel, oceanfront may not be the oceanfront you would think. Ours was a great view, bur the same room at secrets maroma would be an Oceanview" not OF. This has to do with the way they have categorized the buildings.
That being said, the grounds there are some of the most beautiful we have seen at a hotel. Well maintained but you never hear gardeners making a lot of noise.
Some of the best food we had was a the seaside grill, where Reynol, the Manager prepared at our request, shrimp scampi for lunch, It was so good, we are still talking about it. We had it twice. Really good. Oceana had some pretty good food, but the wonderful sauces they described were like non-existent when we received the food and always had to ask for it. The buffet was good for breakfast, lots of choices.
Our biggest problem was the wine. The Chardonnay tastes like Savignon blanc which we do not like. We paid for a bottle of Chardonnay and it still tasted the same. We also bought bottles of Cab, which were ok, but not great, not worth the money.
We believe the problem is that they are not serving Mexican wines. After stays at other Secrets and Dreams and Iberostar Grand, whom all serve Mexican and Chilean wines, this resort should really look into this matter. I read other travelers reviews that felt the same.
We are not pool people, only go to the beach, This time of year of course everyone in the world was there snorkeling in the area (Akumal=turtle) so we got the palapas on the right side of the beach, much better for swimming. There is coral but not too bad.
The beach patrol monitor closely so that non hotel guests don't take the chairs and palapas. The non hotel guests lay on the beach right up to the "line" of the hotel grounds. We stayed in that same bay back in the early 80s and it was amazing how much the area has changed. The drive from the airport is around an hour, just so you know.
All in all, we had a lovely time and would recommend the hotel.

The hotel is beautiful. The staff is excellent. Drinks are legit and the food is on the better side of good.

I worked with Wine Sommelier, Fabiola, before our arrival to reserve the beach beds and Wine Cellar dinner. Everything was arranged properly and without incident. Fabiola is excellent and we cannot thank her enough for making our stay top flight! She gave us that special touch by checking in from time to time to say hola and really made us feel special. Thank you Fabiola!

Here are my recommendations for experiencing an enhanced stay:

We stayed in a Preferred Room / Garden View, Building 6, next to the Preferred Club. (Our Concierge, Araceli, was excellent) Although we really enjoyed the Club, I think we will save the money and stay in a non-preferred next time. I had some business to do while there and the Preferred Club biz center was easy to work from. The Concierge’s and Bar Tenders were great. The morning and afternoon small bites were convenient.

Rent a Beach Bed. $55 per day. We had a bed 2 of our 9 days. The beach staff is excellent.

For my Birthday, we reserved the private Wine Cellar Room at Portofino/Bordeaux with a Wine Sommelier & personal wait staff. UNBELIEVABLE! (Ulysses, Maitre d’ of Bordeaux, took care of us and was amazing – a real pro and super nice guy. He was so good that we ate at Bordeaux 2 more times, all great.) Spent $200 on 3 bottles of premium wine, hand selected by the Sommelier, paired to our Chef selected meal (not on the restaurant menu)

We also reserved a spot at the Teppanyaki table at Himitsu. Super fun.

The ceviche for lunch at Oceana was very good.

Take the bike ride to Yal-Ku. 3 hours off the resort campus. Lorena was our lead guide and she was amazing. They do the tour M-W-F.

Bring your own snorkel gear. As reported, the snorkelling is pretty good. If you go south of the resort, out beyond the turtle cork line, the coral stacks and fish are bigger and more plentiful. Yes, you will see turtles.

Bring your own pool floaty’s. We brought 2 inflatable floating chairs. The resort floats are fine, but there are only a hand full to share. By bringing our own, we had what we liked and always had them available.

Bring your own thermos cups. We had 16 oz cups with our names on them. The bar tenders always remembered our names and what we liked because of our cups. I was surprized to see over ½ of the guest also had their own cups. If you don’t bring them, they sell them at the Resort store.

Take part in some of the daily events put on by the Secrets Entertainment Team. We did the kayak tour, pool bikes, and pool aerobics. There were some pretty good volley ball games and there are cooking classes, card games, and even more – all good fun without being cheesy. The Entertainment staff is great – with Lorena leading the pack. We also had fun with Rene, Jonas, and Lupe - they were all super fun.

Dance at Desires. The DJ did not play music that I particularly liked, but we still had a good time most every night. (We are Gen-X and they played pretty much only the newer hip-hop – the kids loved it….)

We dressed up pretty fancy every night for dinner and did not feel out of place. About ½ the folks dress casual. Yes, the men have to wear long pants - not a big deal.

The Rendezvous Bar had great music every night and the Martini Bar was close by for a pre-dinner drink (or three!) The bar tender, Jesus, was excellent and a super nice guy. Try his Apple-Tini’s. Off the charts good with the little white apple!

The Spa is first class – we both had massages and they were excellent. The hydrotherapy circuit is a good experience. Preferred Club has unlimited use of the facilities. Treatments are a bit expensive, but it was a nice treat.

I think there was a wedding every afternoon – it was a lot of fun watching (from a distance) the goings on. I think it added to the happy and festive feel of the Resort.

We left some jewelry in our room and are now working with management to have it shipped back to us. Housekeeping found it. They take pictures of the "lost and found" items and once positively ID'd, they help get it back to you. Very professional and very impressive how they managed this whole process!

Final thought – The combo of the architecture, resort layout, rooms, gardens, entire staff, beach, pools, food and drink – you cannot go wrong. Fabuloso! We will be back!

Our stay at Secrets Akumal could not have been better. The weather wasn’t the greatest but the staff and quality of everything at the resort was perfect. Gabriela, our concierge made for a great experience as well as Cesar by the pool. Go here, you will love it!

Room Tip: Ocean front made all the difference for us as well! Beautiful view.
