“not what i expected”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2012

Never felt the need to write a review and usually find them too negative compared to reality.
Pros
food was good at this hotel, and staff were courteous and friendly.
Cons
don't know if we were just unlucky but room was terrible, musty smell on arrival which was sprayed with an air freshner when we complained. Furniture was very dated definitely NOT a 5 star hotel room, expectations were high and looked like any Spanish 3 star hotel room. flooding was a big issue, the floor was like an ice rink after it was raining and i made sure i didn't wear heels during these times. saw a few falls.

We have enjoyed our stays at the Bahia Principe Tulum. It is a good resort for families. nothing outstanding but nothing too distasteful either. My problem is with the Priviledge Club that is marketed to the patrons. We finally bought in last year at the lowest level to try it out. Thank god we didn't spend more than we did, because our group, and another family that went with us on our recommendation, felt distinctly unpriviledged this year.
There are certain ammenities that our membership fee is supposed to buy for us, such as courtesy golf carts to ride in instead of having to wait on the insane trolley system, upgraded rooms on the beach, game systems in the rooms, free internet, etc..... None of these things happened. There was literally not much that the priviledge club did right during our stay. It is a shame that we are paying for it anyway. The list of dissapointments is too long for any one article but here goes the short version.
We made, and paid for, our reservations in Dec 2011. We had numerous contacts via email and phone up to and including the week before our vacation started on Jun 23 2012. We were assured that everything was in place for us to have a wonderful time. It all fell apart on Jun 22, the day before we were supposed to fly out, when we were notified that our rooms had been overbooked. How could that little nugget of info have been neglected when we had contact so many times with various people from the resort? so, having no choice at that point, we had to fly out the next day not knowing what was going to happen.
what did happen was that our group was placed into the golf resort far from the beach. Also, all of our alacarte dinner reservations were made for the wrong number of people. There was no priviledge club staff on duty or to be found when we arrived. The hotel staff helped us as much as possible but they were limited in what they could do for priviledge club business. The other family that we were traveling with were placed into the same area of the resort that we should have been in right along the beach. It was a logistics nightmare because our kids wanted to be out on the beach with the other kids but it was a ten minute trolley ride to the other side, after waiting some amount of time for the right trolley to show up. So, we were not able to enjoy our resort because we had to be on the other side of the property with the kids. This went on for three days, and numerous meetings in the priviledge club offices, before we could be moved to rooms on the beach. we couldn't get any priviledge club carts to show up so we had to move ourselves and all of our luggage by loading up a trolley and taking that. that was very special. The carts were unreliable at best. the free internet in the room did not happen. we had to spend too much time with the priviledge club people to try to get them to understand that they ruined the first three days of our vacation and that they needed to do something to make up for it. hell, we're still paying for this club membership and they can't manage to make a good attempt at customer service in the first year. how much worse can this get? i don't know how this will all end up for us but i hope we can reach some agreement with the company that offers the priviledge club experience. when they ask you to go to the priviledge club presentation, beware.

Stayed at this resort with my family between 18th June and 1st July 2012 and it was fantastic ... the resort split into 3 sites and we visited the 6 a la carte restaurants during our stay and our favourites were the Mikado.. Japanese... if booking ask for a " SHOW " table where the chef will display his cooking skills right in front of you .... and the Le Gourmet was also excellent.

Didn't like or appreciate the time share sell in the lobby but they offer free gift vouchers for the hotel shops or Dolphin show ticket so if you can listen and walk away then do it ... I personally cannot be bothered with it whilst on my hols.

Dolphin show is available free at 11.30 each day but we didn't go as we thought it a bit unethical keeping a few dolphins in the small pool but others went and enjoyed it.

Food at the buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner was brilliant so much choice and the staff cannot do enough to assist.... although some holiday makers were rude to the staff....

Beaches and pools are kept so clean and the local wildlife includes turtles crabs iguanas racoons and small rodent like creatures. Thomas Cook tour reps Ellie and Helen on site were appalling when my sister fell and broke her arm.... only interested in selling trips which they obviously will get commission on.

Would recommend Xcaret and Whale Shark trips both great value and excellent for money. I would recommend using the Collectivo mini vans local bus service to visit beach at Akumal for snorkelling, ruins at Tulum and Playa Del Carmen for shopping

Whenever I read a bad review, I always wonder if that individual had such perfectionistic expectations that it's almost impossible to shift their perceptions to see reality?
Then again ,once in a while someone has a less than stellar vacation. That was not the case for me.
I stayed at the Bahia Principe Tulum for 2 weeks and for the most part loved it, I reserved the deluxe junior suite which was located in Bldg 4 on the 3rd floor. Originally there were supposed to be 3 of us going including my 11 year old son, but I ended up going alone and kept the suite. It was worth the extra $47/night. I had a pleasant partial ocean view and the suite was very nice. The bed with a bed topper was very comfortable. The room was close to the main area and right across from the beach. Housekeeping was friendly and did a nice job Keeping the room tidy. Leaving a few pesos is always helpful as well.
The grounds are especially nice at all three of the Bahia Principe properties. everything is manicured and well cared for. The facilities in general including the lobby area, the buffet dining area etc were all very nice.
The buffet was quite good and even after 10 days or so, I didn't grow tired of the selection as there was all varieties of grilled fish including grouper and salmon. Fresh omlettes and eggs were always available as well as a nice assortment of vegetables and fruit...especially papaya..yummy!
The pools were very nice and never overly crowded and the activity leaderswere always workin' it and doing a nice job with the main pool crowd.
The entertainment and shows were also quite good and that was especially true for the Michael Jackson (Lev Jackson) show. I'm not a Michael Jackson fan but this was really entertaining and the dancing was very good. There was a show each night and each had it's highlights.
The beach was roomy enough and the water was beautiful. It's always possible to find a beach chair although people do get out there and put their towels out early.
The dive shop and related personnel were terrific and always tried to make any of the water experiences fun and easy. My all time favorite National Geographic tour was the Whaleshark Snorkeling Adventure...It was the highlight of the trip. I had 2 nice SCUBA dives as well.
Travel to and from the hotel was also efficient and pleasant through Olympus Tours.
A couple of downsides.. I like to exercise and was able to get a couple of runs in around the grounds between the 3 sections but with the heat and humidity, half hour runs was about my limit. The gym however was a 2 star gym. The facility was nice but the equipment was a bit archaic and there wasn't much of it.
Last but not least, there was a level of rudeness on the part of other guests, (especially those from Latin American countries) at the hotel that surprised me. I wont belabor this but twice my belongings were moved from a table where I had placed them. Upon returning with my plate of food my belongings had been set on the floor on somewhere else and language barrier made it difficult to confront these folks in any meaningful way.
Overall the resort is especiall fun for couples and families and I would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: Have a few 20 peso bills or dollar bills as the staff is very appreciative.

Got round to finally doing my review. We stayed at the resort (tulum) september 2011 for 14 nights. From the first day to the last the whole experience was amazing. There is plenty to do from sunbathing, pool games, swimming with dolphins drinking and most of all our favourite thing to do eating. The buffet always had a great range of food and was of good quality but the a la carte reatuarants were to die for no complaints what so ever. Our favourite was Don pablo excellent steaks. We had great weather which made the holiday even better what more could you ask for. We loved it that much we are returning this year in october and hope everything is as great as last year.
