We first vacationed at this fabulous resort in 2002 and have been back every year since, usually for 2 weeks in the Spring and again in the Fall. In some years, we have been for a third vacation usually to celebrate a special occasion. We very much enjoy the resort and our time with many of the staff who have become our "Bahia family", and we have often recommended the Bahia Tulum to family and friends whose experience during their time there have some returning again and again.

Our most recent vacation was from May 9th - 23rd 2012. Prior to leaving Canada, we were able to arrange our a la cartes through Nicki (Sub-director) and Melissa (Public Relations Manager and also our preferred villa close to our favourite "hang out" spots - the Tulum Lobby Bar (Bar Akumal), the Tulum pool and the main lobby. All was arranged very efficiently.

From the time of our arrival and throughout our time there, we were made to feel very welcome and very special by everyone. Yes, we know many of the staff, but even those who met us for perhaps the first time were as welcoming and eager to provide us with a great vacation experience. We always enjoy the food, the drinks, the many things to do right on the resort, the grounds, flowers and the many iguanas, but the staff and their positive and fun attitude is what keeps us coming back.

Favourite restaurants - the don Pablo and the Tequila. We enjoy the buffet restaurants as well, and enjoy going to the buffets in other parts of the resort on occasion. Favourite bar - the Bar Akumal, Tulum's lobby bar. We start with an early morning cuppachino and usually end the day enjoying the live music with a favourite drink. And the staff remember our favourite drinks from one vacation to another!!

We suggest travelling throughout the Bahia complex and spending some time in all 4 areas. The snorkelling is best near the bar El Mar at the Akumal end. The trolley service works well and the staff will help you travel throughout the Bahia. Try a little Spanish with the staff - they are great teachers.

Tipping - we have never been made to feel that tips are expected and when we do tip, staff are very appreciative. FYI - staff cannot exchange coins at the banks for pesos. We plan to have enough US paper money in the right denominations for tipping.

We have read in some reviews concerns about a couple of experiences that others have had. First, matters requiring some maintenance in rooms. We had 2 minor issues, one to do with the telephone and the other to do with a light fixture. Neither was urgent for us and we brought these to the attention of the Reception staff and the Public Relations staff in the evening and both were addressed the next morning. Secondly, there is a Privilege Club being promoted in the lobby close to the Public Relations office, and certain people "promoting" this club have to tendency to be intimidating and misleading. When we brought this to attention of the Director and Sub-Diirector of Tulum, the matter was dealt with immediately and effectively, and staff from the Privilege Club subsequently remained within their boundaries. We do not typically have any issues when we are at the Bahia Tulum, but this time when we required the assistance of staff, the response was appreciated.

So another great vacation and we have already booked our next one for October. Again, the staff at the Bahia Tulum is the resort's greatest asset!! We are looking forward to returning.

Ron and Wendy

My wife and I have just returned from a two week visit to BP Tulum. This was our eleventh two week visit in twelve years. We have always had a great vacation and this year was no exception but budget cuts are obvious to the return visitor with a few of areas falling short of previous visits.
Most noticeable and I think most important is the reduction in service at the Tulum buffet. The ‘meat dish’ trays (only two this year) were left empty for up to thirty minutes with scraps of dried food left in them. An n assistant would then come round and check the trays and radio to the kitchen for refills which would then take a few more minutes to arrive. On all of our previous visits there were a number of chefs constantly monitoring the food and refilling even before they were empty. It was not the case on this visit. Also missing was the nightly carved roasts. Overall the Tulum buffet this time around was just ok. We also ate at the Coba and Akumal buffets and these were fine. We booked our a la carte reservations ahead of our visit and these were excellent as usual. Don Pablo and Arlequin still being our favourites.
The snack bar was closed for renovations at the beginning of our second week and we were told that it would be this way for about three weeks. The day we left it was completely boarded up and the plywood painted yellow. I appreciate that the work has to be carried out somewhen so this being the case on the advice of the posted notice we headed over to the Akumal snack bar for breakfast… no cereal, no milk, no little sandwiches, very little fruit, only white bread. This was at 9am but they were serving alcohol!! Priorities a bit skewed here I think.
We spend many evenings at The Akumal Hotel Pakal Bar and another very noticeable change was to the music. On all previous visits there was a quartet of musicians...guitarist, keyboards, drummer and a singer. This year the regular band at the Coba Premier lounge was gone and the quartet was split into two groups-drummer/guitarist at the Pakal bar and singer/keyboard player at the Coba Premier lounge. I do have it on good authority that this was done for purely financial reasons.
Although the grounds are immaculate there were some noticeable differences this time around. There is also much less visible security on the grounds than we have seen in previous years especially at night.
This hotel now seems to be a popular choice for weddings with several each day. This makes for a large number of twenty somethings, many of whom seem to want to congregate around the south pool and party and swim (loudly) until three or four in the morning. We have had the same room for a number of visits and this is the first time that this has been an issue.
I spoke with Melchor the manager about the noise and he suggested I contact the front desk if it occurred again. I did so and it was resolved within thirty minutes. I know people like to have a good time on vacation but consideration is needed for other guests who may like a quieter time. I think the hotel needs security to monitor the noise level around the hotel grounds in order for this hotel not to be known for a great place to party all hours.
As I mentioned we have been to this hotel eleven times and each time it has been a great vacation. Even when we were there in October 2005 when Hurricane Wilma struck the hotel staff were amazing at making sure everyone was safe and were fed. (I did write a review of our experience at that time”Blown away by the Bahia experience”)
After so many great visits I am unhappy to report some negative aspects but I do so in the hope that the issues will be addressed by the hotel management.
I have recommended this hotel to about a dozen friends, colleagues and families over the years and they have all said they had a great time. I plan to continue to do this. I know the management do monitor Tripadvisor and I am sure they will act on what they feel is important to their guests and I am sure we will be back again in the not too distant future.

My husband and I visited the GBP Tulum in early April 2012; we got a great deal through AC Vacations on the Leap Day sale, and had gorgeous weather the entire week. You've all read about the airport, the shuttle and whatnot so I'll not go in to that.

We had a superfast check-in with a nice welcome drink, and our luggage arrived in our room within minutes of our arrival. I had emailed guest services to indicate we were looking for a quiet room location, top floor, and with a view of the ocean if possible. We stayed in building 32, top floor, beautiful view of the ocean and overlooking the dolphin pool. The dolphin pool is busy throughout the day, but very quiet in the evenings. Our room was very clean, and the maid service and mini-bar service excellent throughout the week. Beds were very comfy.

This resort is HUGE...we had previously been to much smaller resorts in the Caribbean, and it took us a couple of days to just sort out the three trolley lines that circuit the Tulum and sister resorts.

We had some excellent meals - Don Pablo's really stands out as a first class restaurant in terms of the ingredients they use, and their level of service. We also enjoyed the show table at Mikado, this is a really fun experience and we met some fellow Canadians! The buffet was pretty good, and I loved the chicken tacos at the Snack Bar. One disappointment was the lamb at Arlequin...all I can say is yuck...and the mini potatoes were very undercooked (think hockey pucks).

The beach is rocky, but interesting, and that gorgeous view is something I could never tire of looking at. For those who like to walk on the beach...it is a challenge here.

Overall, we had really good service, tasty drinks (love Bailey's!), and had a lovely, relaxing vacation.

Recently returned from this hotel and have to say it was fantastic! From the moment we arrived to the time that we left it was all good. The place itself is vast yet cosy, the ability to use the free and frequent transport makes a large complex easily accessible. The staff from top to bottom were different class, happy, friendly and welcoming. The choice of restaraunts was brilliant, the food hot and well cooked and served with aplomb in the gourmet and a la cartes. Drinks aplenty, snacks if required, gardens immaculate, rooms lovely, I could go on and on.
Do yourselves a favour, if you have thought about Mexico, go! But make sure you stay at this hotel. WE WILL RETURN!!!!!!

Room Tip: Club Hacienda has it all.

I travelled to this resort in April, 2012 for 5 days. I can't say enough good things about it. The people who worked here are very friendly and helpful. The food and drinks were excellent as were the nightly shows. The dancing team was just fabulous. The grounds and pool area were unbelievably clean.

There were only 2 'down sides' - the first being the distance from the aiport. It was 2 hours driving time by the time all the stops were made plus 1 hour waiting on the bus to leave. So it was over 3 hours between the time the plane landed to arriving to the hotel. When you are there for only 5 days, every minute counts. But I can't fault the hotel for this, it is the transportation company that the package provider used.

And as others have mentioned, the beach is rocky. It is beatiful beach and the water was crystal blue and warm.

I would definitely go back here!! I loved it!

Dear Chris:

First of all thank you very much for staying in the Gran Bahia Principe Tulum Resort and taking the time to write your positive impressions. It is for guests like you that our resort remains one of the most appreciated hotels in the Riviera Maya.

It is wonderful to read that you have enjoyed the food and beverage offered during the stay, the quality of the night entertainment and the cleaning of our personal in all areas.

Concerning the beach area, the beach is public in Mexico for which the hotels can not change the natural aspects as coral, reef and rocks, located at the entrance of the beautiful Caribbean Sea and may sometimes molest people during their swimming session. In front of the Gran Bahía Príncipe Riviera Maya complex we have about 1.3km beach area where rocky areas and white sand areas alternate and give the opportunity to everybody to move freely to find the perfect spot to swim or enjoy.

In the hope we may receive you and your family again, we send you our best regards.
