my husband and I love snorekling from this beach. Put on your gear and walk into the water to see so much marine life on your own and you don't have to pay! Beach goes on for miles, nice relaxing day!

What a great day of snorkeling. Saw many turtles and several rays. Oh and there are some great coral reefs filled with fish also. Even saw a sea snake.

Loved the sand, sun, zumba, snorkelling, bar, docks, the sky everything about it. Suntan location cost $27.00 dollars so bring lots.

My husband and I took a taxi from our complex with two sisters so splitting the fare was worth it especially when there was a downpour. The beach and restaurants were crowded but it was a very casual place to visit. We took turns snorkeling so that someone was always in with the towels, etc. It is a good idea to go to the interpretive center for the short video on viewing the turtles and sea life before you go in. It would be better yet if everyone followed the guidelines of how to view these amazing creatures, so more people can enjoy them and so that they will continue to come back to this locale. Next time I would not be talked into getting the life jackets to keep us above the turtles. You don't need them and the cost while not prohibitive is unnecessary. You may even be told that you have to, but I saw many without them. If you don' have the cash, they will let keep some valuable you give them until the equipment is returned. You can rent all your snorkel gear there...but it adds up and is costly. Sometimes by the anchored boats you will encounter a barracuda, or huge grouper lounging in the shadows. The water was rather murky the day we went and with all the people in the water it was sometimes hard to see. There are individuals who hire themselves out as guides. They are probably inexpensive, but we were able to see things without them...just see where a guided group is going and head that way when they are out of that area. The turtles feed on sea grass so if you find that...the turles may be not far behind, but fairly well camouflaged. Give them space and just 'touch with your eyes'!

Akumal beach has beautiful white sand, great swimming in several areas and wonderful snorkeling. If you snorkel to see the turtles and the reef--please use a life jacket versus a snorkel vest--helps keep you up and safely off the reef structures. Don't overdo it in the sun especially between 10am-2pm. Use reef friendly sun screen always. Prepare to be amazed at what you can see on the reef.
