Review of Carving Board

Carving Board

Carving Board is a gourmet eatery that has a daily offering of staple items plus lots of specials. There can be quite a line at popular times of the day, but it's worth it. You pick what and how much of each item you'd like, and they plate it for you. Tons of salad options--chicken and tuna salads, at least two potato salads, spinach salad, fresh fruit--and then other items like quiche, meats, custom sandwiches, soups, and my favorites: spicy noodles and a great beet/orange side dish. Great to stop by and take home for dinner, or dine in. Can't go wrong.

I love the Carving Board because everything is so fresh. There's SO much to choose from as well. I can never make up my mind. They have tons of salad options, but also serve sandwiches and nice entrees. You can't walk out of there spending less than $10, but it's very good.

The best place in town for a casual meal, lunch or dinner. Also, a perfect choice for a fresh and healthy meal to go. They offer a wonderful selection of their best sellers plus daily specials. Our favorites: the tomato basil soup, the orange-ginger marinated grilled shrimp, the oriental chicken salad and the marinated grilled chicken.

I haven't found any authentic New York style delis in North Carolina, but the Carving Board is a pretty good approximation. We've dined here many times over the last decade, usually while shopping at Thruway Shopping Center, and we've always enjoyed the food.

If you arrive between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM you should expect a lengthy wait in the first-come-first-served ordering line. TIP: Grab a takeout menu just inside the front door and try to decide what you want before you get to the front of the line.

At that point someone behind the deli counter will take your order and build your sandwich. Salads and many sides are also available. The checkout register is at the far end of the counter. During peak demand times you may have to wait for your food to be delivered at your table, but there really isn't any table service beyond that.

Today I and my companion ordered Reuben sandwiches and shared a bowl of the potato leek soup. Both were delicious, especially the melted Swiss cheese on the Reubens.

In the interest of not holding up the ordering line, we didn't specify any particular type of bread or condiments, so we received the house standard. TIP: If you prefer dark rye bread and mustard, you need to ORDER dark rye and mustard. It isn't practical to try to get anything changed after it's delivered.

This restaurant is very crowded at lunchtime. TIP: Get someone from your party to claim an open table while the others go through the line. Obviously someone else will need to order and pay for the table squatter.

P.S.: We saw several mothers with infants during our visit today, but we didn't see any children older than that. Most of the patrons seemed to be shoppers or office workers on a lunch break. Indoor and outdoor tables are available.
