Owner description: Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre stands as a monument to the contribution by the Chinese to the establishment and economic and cultural advancement of Ararat. It tells a story of deprivation, hardship and the incredible tenacity of thousands of men from the south east of China that made their way to Victoria, in the 1850s in search of gold. Become engrossed in the courthouse stories and see the original Canton Lead Mine tunnel uncovered during the construction of the Centre. A truly interactive experience for visitors of all ages. Open 7 days a week except Christmas Day 11am-4pm 31-33 Lambert Street (Western Highway) Ararat 3377 03 5352 1078

This gem of a museum in Ararat follows the epic journey of the Chinese from Southern China to the goldfields of western Victoria.
Grant provided an interesting introduction to how the museum came to be, the significance of the design and construction. A 10 minute film explained the reasons why the Chinese made such a perilous journey, the difficulties and their successes. The museum can be explored at leisure with interesting exhibits. There is a little souvenir and gift shop at the entrance.

My friend brought me to this heritage centre that was created to show the linkage of the Chinese to gold mine days in Australia. Was wondering if have a center or just some info boards will suffice

Hi Collette. We are very pleased you had a great visit.. and yes the view is great.. on one side is the great view of Mt Langi Ghiran (the Sleeping Lady) and on the other side is a great closeup of our amazing roof, which interestingly when lit at night is visible from the Sleeping Lady!

What a terrific little museum! If you are anywhere near Ararat, don’t miss this place. A well put together glimpse into an important but little known part of our history. I loved the interactive displays and the personal stories. Special thanks to Grant for the enthusiastic introduction.

Hi Victoria, thanks for our review and your kind words. Our gift shop is tiny but jam packed with lots of different things, very different, that make excellent gifts or curios for your own house. We are very glad you enjoyed your time. We hope to see you again some time.
