Cafe Catalina is located adjacent to the aquatic centre, with views direct across the Southport Broadwater, which is quite stunning on a bright and sunny autumn day.
I visited with a friend on a busy Saturday morning to discuss some business. We were seated quickly. The restaurant was well staffed, and it was not long before we were served with still and sparkling water, and orders taken.
For dietary reasons at the time, what I required was off-menu, and the wait staff had no trouble accommodating my request, helpfully and courteously. Brunch was simple (as asked for), perfectly cooked and well presented, and served within 10 minutes of ordering.
My only quibble was the time it took for our tea and coffee to arrive, although I could understand from the waitress's apology and the number of diners why there might be a delay.
Apart from the view and the food, what really stood out was the genuine charm of the staff. The Gold Coast has a mixed and variable reputation for service quality, but I have to say that Cafe Catalina sets the bar exactly where it should be in this department.
I will return when I can better sample what looked like an interesting and varied breakfast menu.
