“Place that Grows on you!”

My Brother and I also made the decision to go Lorella Springs and was not disappointed at all. We first met Nancy and her two awsome dogs, the dogs greet you when you pull up in the car and the place at first seemed different in it's own way. We where intended to go further to the fishing camp but Nancy was nice enough to persuade us to stay near the station and relax as we had just drove a long way. This was the best idea of all and the 'Magical Springs' just felt so refreshing.
The Camping area is set out very nice with big shady trees and the toilets and showers are very clean also. It was a shame that we had to keep moving the next day other wise it's a place you could stay there for at least for a few days just relaxing.
I finally met Rhett, Nancy's son and he also is very nice bloke and also a keen fisher.
We'll be certainly back with the family one day!

We stumbled upon Lorella Springs when driving the Savannah Way - Nathan River road between Roper Bar and Cape Crawford in a remote area of the Northern Territory. The signs took our interest and we decided to take a punt and travel down the 29km driveway to the homestead. It was worth the drive. We were met by the friendly owner Rhett Walker and given a bit of a tour of the immediate area which included thermal springs and a rocky outcrop ideal for viewing sunset. We were just in time for happy hour at the quirky little outback style bar. We were set up for camping and cooking for ourselves, but decided to book out the safari tents with double beds and let Rhett cook up one of his king sized steaks.
After dinner we lazed around in the warm thermal springs with cold beers swapping travelling tips with other guests and looking at the clear starry skies.
The next day Rhett took us for an informal tag along tour of the million acre property which is stunningly beautiful. There are billabongs, thermal springs, waterfalls and wetlands teeming with birds throughout the property. Rhett said he seems to discover a new waterhole or spring every year. He has put in a network of four wheel drive tracks for visitors to explore the property. There is a track that goes all the way to the coast (Gulf of Carpentaria). You can have a go at fishing in the nearby billabong which is about 5km long and full of Barramundi and freshwater crayfish (redclaw). No swimming in here because there is a crocodile lurking in there. There was so much to do and it was such a nice place we decided to stay the extra day and night and explore a bit more before continuing on to Queensland. We drove around the property which is well signposted, swimming in various inviting water holes and waterfalls. We watched Lorella Springs resident contract musterer for about an hour as his well trained dogs rounded up the cattle. The place is amazing if you are into birdwatching. We saw sea eagles and jabirus and apparently they have Gouldian finches on the property too. Lorella is very basic, but very friendly with lots to do. Camping is $15 per person per night and the safari tents are $100 per night. You can get a good meal and drinks at the bar. The closest town to Lorella Springs is Borroloola. You can get to Lorella via the Roper Highway from the north or from Cape Crawford/Heartbreak Hotel via the Carpentaria highway from the South. Four wheel drive is recommended. They sell fuel if you need it.
