“Authentic Chinese / Taiwanese food at reasonable prices”

Pros:
Excellent authentic Taiwanese / Chinese food
Decent portions
Friendly and "mom/pop" service

Cons:
Small place -- less than a dozen tables
Tables need to be replaced -- showing age

This is the go-to place for traditional Chinese or Taiwanese food. Ask for the "Chinese menu" -- it has English descriptions on it, or ask about the written traditional Chinese menu on the board.

The customers are mostly Chinese, so that tells you something about the food. There is a wide range selection of dishes.

For those who prefer "Americanized Chinese Food" (and I am one of those at times), their food in that category is also pretty good.

You can order dishes to share, or order more "individualized" dishes such as rice and noodles. Some things to try are the "Beef Noodle Soup", a quintessential Taiwanese dish, as is "Pork Chop over Rice".

The prices are decent... Lunch special in the $6 range and dishes are in the 10-15 range. Good deal for what you get.

This restaurant purports to specialize in duck dishes prepared Chinese style. We didn't order it and instead ordered other dishes. The food was far below standards even for small towns Chinese food. We noticed that neighboring tables had their duck dishes and their food looked better.

Wow! Definitely the best Peking Duck in the Triangle. This is a tiny place with no ambiance. However, the night we went the clientele was almost entirely Asian, which, to me, is a good sign. Many of the tables ordered duck and the food looked good, but it took a while to get a table. We were not disappointed once we sat down. The duck was worth the wait - crispy skin and not greasy. The duck is served with pancakes. The vegetables - snow pea leaves and an eggplant dish -were both on target. For an extra $5 you can get a huge bowl of duck soup with a duck order. This was not overly good, but worth the money.

We keep searching for interesting Chinese food (like Peter Chang's in Richmond) but also with options that are not too fiery--just flavorful. We tried Taipei Cafe early on a Sunday afternoon and were surprised to find that they offer their luncheon specials seven days a week. The luncheon special is certainly good value: for $6.50-6.95 you can get an egg roll, choice of soup, and an entree and rice. If you want less, you choose between the egg roll and soup, with rice and entree for $5.95

But the real treat would be to try the variety on the regular menu, much more diverse than many with several chef's specialties and a broader range among the categories of seafood, pork, chicken, beef, vegetarian. We got luncheon specials of pork fried rice, nicely done, and chicken and shrimp in a slightly spicy sweet sauce with water chestnuts and carrot, quite good. Wish we had been part of a bigger party so we could have tried more menu items at one sitting; portions are ample. Service in this fairly small restaurant, was pleasant and efficient. They describe their food as "new style Chinese cuisine and healthy". I'm not sophisticated enough about Chinese food to understand how it is new style but the choices are quite interesting. We hope to return and work our way through more of the menu.
