This business is a shining star and a treasure for the area. The grounds are beautiful maintained. We were amazed about how lovely the inside of the house as well. We loved our host Mrs. Johnson. She provided us with a welcoming choice of beverages and cooked an amazing breakfast.

Room Tip: all the rooms have a great view.

We had no idea what to expect since we had never been in a B&B previously. It exceeded all of our expectations. The home is beautiful, the owner was very friendly and just like family, and the rooms comfortable and clean. This is a 75 year old very high end home and the details in the rooms were wonderful. The grounds can not be replicated in a modern hotel - it was amazing. Breakfast was done to our convenience and again hand cooked by the owner. Attention to detail was great - refrigerators stocked with free water soda wine snacks etc. AND a great price. This is the only place we will stay when our travels return us to this area. Dave D

After having made our reservations, I happened onto the preceding reviews posted here. I think it is vital to post a more recent, and quite favorable review. I am not sure what the other reviewers expected in a B&B, or how the property and hostess did not measure to their expectations. We found it absolutely wonderful. Perhaps the prior reviews provoked a change but its important to record a current review.

Built in the mid-20th century, the property has an exquisite sense of age and comfort. Hand-built rock walls define a pond which encircles a spectacular home. Two islands can be reached by quaint bridges, a gazebo adorns the yard, and several sets of chairs invite you to enjoy the quiet and solitude surrounding the property. Views onto the river are enriched by a stroll across the street onto the private dock that extends into the river itself.

The hostess welcomed our early arrival (for which we had given notice) and allowed us to store our bicycles in their garage overnight. Her warm smile and quick tour was not intrusive and gave us the chance to explore! Pictures of family adorn the walls in nearly every hall. An extraordinary library with endlessly soft sofas and recliners could be a permanent residence for any reader. The large sunroom was distinctive.

During our stay, we saw at least two additional staff on the property (which only has 4 guest rooms, each substantial and well-decorated). There were no signs of neglect, and all of the comforts (DVD, DirectTV, fireplace, air conditioner, coffee maker, fridge in the hall (with water, soft drinks and wine available at no cost) were working and fully stocked.

Our room was terrific--king size poster bed with exquisitely comfortable linen, nearly a dozen comfortable pillows and every room looked onto the best features of the property.

Finally, the breakfast menu provided abundant options, the choice of when to dine, and generous, tasty, full fare servings! But the dining room may be the highlight of the house--amazing wallpaper, spectacular settings, and immediate, warm conversations with the other guests enriched our two night stay.

So, do please consider this property for your visit to the area. One of the adventures of B&Bs is the adventure of discovering what is behind the front door. Here, we found warmth, extraordinary comfort, and great value. We will be back for sure!

The Pond House Inn provided a perfect base to support my business trip to Elizabeth City. It was located a few blocks from downtown, but on a beautiful piece of land with views of the water that created a nice break from all the meetings of the day. The room was spacious with a desk overlooking the grounds and out to the river. Plus, there was room to spread out in the library, living room or sunroom. Breakfast was set out on an antique table and a co-worker was graciously allowed to join me for the meal without extra charge. I will definitely return and recommend it to all travelers in the area.

Pros: wonderful, comfy bed; pretty room; gorgeous grounds and location; snacks available and Keurig
Cons: unbelievably bad smell throughout the house--I don't mind musty but this was a strange chemical smell that gave me a headache. I just now unpacked and had to wash everything and it still stinks. Washing again. Bathroom sink and toilet were not clean. Tap water was cloudy.

Breakfast was fine--cooked to order but not anything different than what you make yourself at home.

Martha is very knowledgeable about the area and was very helpful. I did not mention the smell or bathroom because I feared a confrontation.

I'm sorry to hear you were uncomfortable. We always want our guests to have a wonderful experience. The public water in this area has a high mineral content, and it does leave mineral circles in sinks and toilets. They are not dirty, they simply have mineral deposits from the water. We do periodically have to scrape the mineral deposits out because no cleaner will remove them. I can't imagine what "chemical" you are referring to, unless it is a bathroom cleaning product. I do wish you had indicated you had a problem and given us a chance to address it for you. It's always best to let the innkeeper know if you have a problem, so it can be resolved. We do want our guests to be happy.
