This is an out of the way location and is one of those local traditions that you will hear about if you ask for recommendations from residents in the southwest VA/NC area. It is quaint, with rockers on the porch and 1950's-era mountain cabins surrounding the restaurant (unsure if they are still available for rent).

Shatley''s is known for their family style service, but with just the two of us that seemed impractical -- in spite of the temptation to be able to try a little of everything! Instead, we ordered from the menu which includes your entrée plus two sides, tea and choice of breads. Hubby got the meat loaf and I got the fried chicken. Both were good...his portion of meatloaf was huge! The sides were good but not as exceptional as I had envisioned. Perhaps because we had lunch that day (often we skip lunch in lie of a quick snack so are hungrier at dinner). We got a banana pudding to go and it was also good, but again not exceptional.

Service was good. Our waitress was attentive and cordial. We drank sweet tea and they leave a pitcher on the table for DIY refills. Also liked that you get a basket of condiments for your breads,,,strawberry jam, apple butter or butter.

All in all, it is a neat little place to visit. Certainly worth a trip if you are in the area, but not sure how far out of my way I would go. I think it would be most enjoyable with a large group where you can order the family style dinner and enjoy sampling it all and comparing notes!

This is a seasonal restaurant in the high country of North Carolina and just reopened for the 2017 season about two or three weeks ago.

In the late 1800's someone claimed that the waters of Shatley Springs has healing properties and had healed him of several conditions. Word got out and it became a spa and attracted people from all over. Much like Saratoga Springs, Bedford Springs and a number of other places at the time. Also it's in the high mountains and people would flock here to get out of the oppressive heat of the low country. Over time, rental cottages sprang up around a small lake also called the Duck Pond and a restaurant as well.

People still show up with empty gallon jugs so they can fill up with the Spring water.

Restaurant and Cabins are still there and serving customers on a daily basis.

I had drived by this place several times but always in the offseason but made a mental note to give it a try. Decided to give it a try last Sunday.

It turns out to be an almost 2 hours drive from Cornelius (North of Charlotte) so it was a bit hard to predict arrival time. We arrived about 2:30 and it's an unusual set up.

We had to go to the office which is separate form the restaurant to check in. They asked if we had reservation and the answer was no we had not because we could not predict our arrival time. No problem. They wrote us in the book, gave us a number and told us it would be about 30 minutes.

Initially we took the opportunity to visit the gift shop next door and to walk down by the lake an take in the beauty of the area. Came back to the large front porch lined with rocking chair and waited our turn.

After about 30 minutes, our number was called which was pretty accurate but only because a number of people who had checked in ahead of us decided to leave and go elsewhere. Not sure where they would go because there is nothing else for at least 10 miles in any direction.

Hostess took us to our seat which was a nice one by the windows with a good view of the lake. She indicated that our server would be there shortly. The couple we had been talking to on the porch were seated at the next table.

As we walked in, something seemed out of place. Still a number of patrons waiting to be seated but a large number of empty tables with place sittings ready to go.

As we waited, our friends were greeted, given menu's beverage ordered taken and delivered and lunch ordered. We are still sitting there and no one have even acknowledged we were there. We did flag down the server for the next table and she gave us menu's. and told us she was not our server but would find her for us.

She finally showed up and since we had menu's we had already decided on what we wanted so we ordered both at the same time. Drinks were served promptly.

Then while we were waiting, we had an opportunity to make some observations. Our server only had 4 tables but one was a table of 20. The other two were tables of 4 each and our table was a party of 2. That's 30 people. Looking over the restaurant, it became apparent that the number of servers was limited which was probably why so many empty tables. Admittance to the dining area was not limited by the number of tables but rather by the number of servers.

Both of us ordered the Fried Chicken from the menu. I had Sweet Potatoes along with Baked Apples while my friend had the Fried Chicken with Cottage Cheese. My second choice would have been the meatloaf.

The Chicken was good but not outstanding and the same for the Baked Apples. The Sweet Potatoes were straight out of the can and very fibrous

All in all, very average.

At the end, we had to go back to the same office to pay which is an unusual way to conduct business but if that is how they want to do it, OK by me.

This location is kind of isolated and getting wait staff must be a challenge. Very limited today but will probably improve in a couple of weeks when schools and Colleges are out and you have a group of individual looking for summer work

Until then, I would probably surmise, service is going to be slow. It's not the fault of the server because our's was very good but trying to cope with existing conditions.

Good place if you have a small crowd. The wait was about 30 minutes and when we got to our table we noticed that there were many empty tables. The wait staff was pleasant and the portions were adequate. I was disappointed that they only serve white meat chicken.

This was the first time eating at the restaurant. The food was ok, service ok. Our server disappeared for a while. The one disappointing issue is that Shatley springs restaurant does not take credit cards, a fact they do not tell you until you get ready to check out or like my husband start googling history facts as you are waiting for your server. Granted they were just opening for the season and had not gotten an ATM a notice would have been nice posted somewhere. We probably will not go back.

It has a country atmosphere, nothing fancy. Meals can be family style or off the menu. There is a natural spring where a person can collect water. There is a gift store.
