House rental for one week in Corova with teens and 2 dogs. Pros- beautiful beach. Cons- lots of driving on the beach. For us, we found the driving on the beach limited our enjoyment. It is difficult to lay out and relax or even walk dogs with vehicles driving. I really thought I would love this beach but next time I would stay in Duck and take a horse tour instead. In the week at our home, we took a 3 mike walk to find horses. They were beautiful but not all around the houses like we anticipated. It depends on what you are looking for I guess. Before you rent a home, ask if there is construction in the lot next to you. Our beach trip had loud machines installing pilings for 5 of the 6 days. Not relaxing at all.

We went through Carova on the Wild Horse tour. The only way to get to this area is by a four-wheel drive vehicle. Very secluded area!

This area of the Outer Banks is a beautiful area to explore but a four wheel drive vehicle is required. We generally go riding on the beach to the Virginia line and roam back where the homes are built. The roads can be deep soft sand and roads are not all labeled so it is easy to get lost. The roads many times have blind hills and pools of water. Beware some are deep so driving through them is not recommended. The wild horses roam freely in amongst the homes. They are beautiful and protected so it is important to stay 50 feet away from them. There is a park back there we tend to go to that has bathrooms, horseshoe pits and pavilions.

So if you head to this beach bring your truck or jeep. You will have so much fun driving on the beach also the horses are everywhere. Most of the horses are inside the town limits walking around the houses. So bringing your truck is a great idea.

I traveled to Carova Beach 30 years ago before the nice beach homes had electricity. During storms and bad weather residents had to drive behind the large sand dunes rather than normally along the beach(no paved or dedicated road) to reach the first paved road at Corolla, NC. A lot has changed in 30 years as I found out last month. These nice multi-level homes now have all the utilities plus numerous bands of Wild Corolla ponies(Spanish Mustang descendants) freely roaming the neighborhoods. If one cares for a place to vacation or live practically 'off the grid' with utilities, Carova Beach ' is the spot, but there is still no road up there, only the beach as a highway!
