Owner description: The Art Loeb Trail. Stretches for 30 miles. Closest to Asheville it crosses the highway at Milepost 420, about 30 min from Asheville NC. Spectacular view from Black Balsam Knob and Tennent Mountain.

We followed and Art Loeb trail up to the summit of Black Balsam Knob from the trailhead off Black Balsam Road. The trail is well worn and goes uphill at a pretty steep pace. Soon you are out in the open climbing several "balds" The views in all directions are spectacular. We did about a 3 mile round trip. It was well worth the effort. We looked down on Graveyard fields and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Grab your day pack and a wide angle lens. This famous trail is among North Carolina's finest. Stunning views 365 days a year. One of our favorites.

My family loves going on the Art Loeb and especially, the Black Balsam section. The view can't be beaten and this section isn't overly taxing for folks that may not get to hike often.

This is a 33 mile hike from the bottom land near Davidson Creek campground in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard all the way up over the Blue Ridge Parkway and into the Shining Rock Wilderness. It is a beautiful trail, but with rocks and roots and considerable elevation gain. You can hike sections of it and get a feel for the experience without doing the whole thing. If you are in shape and up for the challenge it will give you a taste of the Appalachian Trail in a compact 33 mile package.
