We actually picked up this trail at the sports complex at the sports complex in Brevard. I erm it a very easy nice ride. We rode into town and then back out to the campground in the Pisgah Forest. Our total ride was just over 13 miles we really enjoyed it.

I a shorter 4.5 mile loop on this trail, following two days of heavy rains. Not the best time to go. Much of the trail still had standing water and lots of mud. The portion from the parking lot was pretty rocky so the combination made for tricking footing and slower progress. Still, it was a worthwhile trail with some decent views.

We love this trail. Some of the best hiking in the area and the views are amazing. One a clear day you have 360 degree views.

Open vistas can be hard to find but the Art Loeb/Black Balsam Knob areas are loaded! I love being able to see 100 miles on a clear day! Several peaks over 6000 feet provide some challenge. But I'm 64 and made it easy! On day hikes, take cheese and wine! Ahhh.

This trail is not for the faint of heart or shortness of breath as it traverses 3 peaks over 6,000 feet and ends atop Cold Mountain, another peak over 6,000. Plus many more ups and downs along the way. It probably should not be attempted in one outing as it gets tough and stays tough, but there are wilderness camping spots along the way. When you get to the end at Cold Mountain, you have to walk back out so it is truly much longer than advertized.

This summer I only hiked a portion of the trail near the parkway with my son. I have previously hiked much of it. The whole trail can be challenging with the elevation changes, but it crosses some beautiful mountain balds through the Pisgah NF. If you want an easier hike, you can access it at the Blue Ridge Parkway near Black Balsam and do an out-and-back hike.

Loved the open sky views, the path was well marked with a steady steep climb, the view was amazing. Liked the fact that there were no trees, only at the beginning, eyes open spaces that reminded me of home in England.

We always park in the parking lot for Black Balsam (at the end of the road connecting to the Blue Ridge Parkway). Then it's up to the top of Sam Knob for an amazing view and (hopefully) a picnic lunch. After the summit, we enjoy walking down the trail to the right, which takes you down to the river and around back to the parking lot the long way. It's a long walk but SO worth it. Absolutely beautiful (and the river is a great place to stop and cool off in the summer time.

We followed and Art Loeb trail up to the summit of Black Balsam Knob from the trailhead off Black Balsam Road. The trail is well worn and goes uphill at a pretty steep pace. Soon you are out in the open climbing several "balds" The views in all directions are spectacular. We did about a 3 mile round trip. It was well worth the effort. We looked down on Graveyard fields and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
