This review is for the Banner Elk Villa. The villa, including our room, was in fact very nice. Unfortunately managment has not invested the same level of attention and detail into the customer experience. As indicated below, we had a very poor experience. That being said, I should note that the B&B honored our request for a partial refund--although surprisingly there was no return communication to our email with a note of apology.

Having stayed at a number of bed and breakfast inns, we were not only surprised but also disappointed by the level of service (or lack thereof) that we received during our stay. Upon arrival at the villa, we were briefly greeted in passing while exiting our vehicle in the parking lot. No time or effort was taken to walk us into the villa or to show us where our room was located. Once inside, we noticed that our room was dimly lit, primarily due to several inoperable light bulbs that had not been replaced. We also found a used towel in our bathroom, which had been missed by the cleaning staff.

During the extent of our stay, we had absolutely no interaction with any form of staff. No one asked whether we needed anything or if we had been enjoying our stay; the B&B was completely devoid of any full or part-time help or management, no innkeeper. We were left to our own devices, which included finding extra towels and basic toiletries.

One of our biggest disappointments was the "chef-prepared gourmet breakfast," which is touted highly on the villa's website. This expectation was a major factor in our decision to stay at Banner Elk, as the "breakfast" in "bed and breakfast" is ultimately half of the experience. We had expected to receive our "chef-prepared gourmet breakfast" during both days of our stay, but unfortunately we did not. It was not until we arrived and read our welcome letter that we learned our Sunday breakfast would consist of self-served store bought, boxed pastries and a pot of black coffee. Our Monday morning breakfast included nothing more than a small amount of reheated frozen biscuits, cold scrambled eggs, and a few slices of cold bacon--again, entirely self served. Neither experience could or should be considered gourmet, nor the "chef," as we learned, who also served as the cleaning staff for the B&B.

Super busy Sunday afternoon but staff handled it well. They do not have "flights", just tasting for $10. You can order simple apps with the tasting; they were so busy we never got to order. Music, atmosphere was fantastic. Will definitely go back!

We stopped into the winery on a whim while on a weekend vacation in the area. There is a lovely tasting room where you can join in a tasting at the bar, the server explained the background of all the wines and they were all very good, although the pours seemed a little small :) Also, for $10 a tasting you don't get to keep the glass, I have been to other tastings that cost less and you get to keep the glass as a souvenir.

Since it was a gorgeous day we bought a bottle and some cheese and crackers to enjoy outside. It was very chilly and a little windy on this October afternoon but they did have a fire pit and after sitting in the sun for a while it was very nice. Lots of families with kids and dogs were enjoying the beautiful space and there was some lovely live music that we really enjoyed. We ended up buying a second bottle and spent the whole afternoon hanging out.

If you visit I'd recommend bringing your own snacks to save a few bucks and be warned, there is only 1 restroom inside so on this busy day there was always a line. There are also some tables and seating around a fireplace inside the tasting room if you want to sit inside.

We decided to get away for a couple of days in the mountains. When we arrived at Banner Elk Winery and Villa, we were pleased to find that Terri had upgraded us to the Cabernet Suite. It is a huge room overlooking the lake and tasting room with a nice mountain view. Breakfast was really nice. The tasting room staff were great. The owner joined us one afternoon as we relaxed on the porch and told us about his experiences in winemaking and life. He is quite an interesting character.
Very relaxing weekend.

We went here for my birthday, but didn't spend the night at the villa. We went for the wine tasting experience.

It was different than I expected, mainly because we had to stand at a bar and taste the wines. I enjoyed the experience and the barmaid went over each wine and what it was like and the taste of them. I enjoy the experience of learning about each one.

The grounds were beautiful and if it wasn't so hot when we went, I could see hanging out all day enjoying some of the wine. They had tables everywhere and there was a very nice lake to look at while they had someone playing the guitar.

Up the road, they had blueberry patches and off to the side was the B&B.

It was a nice experience.
