I don't know what I expected, but it wasn't this! The Balsam Mt Inn is a leap back in time. It is beautiful, relaxing, historic...everything I hoped.
The Inn is quaint, a throwback to a century ago. The rooms are equally quaint. The restaurant is amazing.
If you want a thoroughly modern, updated hotel, this isn't for you. If you want an unforgettable experience, this is the place to go!

Love this place! We went in May 2017 & learned about their New Years Eve Galla with songwriters in the round. Spent the new years weekend & had a wonderful experience. I must say it was COLD (5degrees) & she IS an OLD lady. Although the lobby has several fireplaces, we still had to wear heavy coats, but it was so worth it. I totally great experience. It snowed & to say beautiful just does not describe. Again Is say, she is OLD. The rooms are small & NOT sound proof, no TV's, clocks, etc. Can't wait to go back. The food was very good & the staff awesome. Best part were the other guests we met & were able to develop friendships.

Room Tip: During the winter, do not stay on first floor. Much too cold! Our second floor room was toasty with radiators very close to the bed

Thank you very much! We appreciate your visit, and yes it was cold that weekend - much colder than we and our Grand Ol' Lady are used to. A note: the inn changed hands in December of 2017 (just before you were here). We hope to see you again soon!

This turn of the century inn, built in 1905, has beautiful charm and ambiance. The rooms are quaint, and may be considered small by some, but you have to remember this place is from a different era. No TVs, and slow internet... but that's because it's nestled 3500 feet up, in the Great Smoky Mountains. A wonderful restaurant, the food was delicious, the staff was extremely friendly, and a wonderful menu.

The place was clean, and although I live close by this is a new getaway for my wife and I.

I can't recommend this place enough. Just set your expectations accordingly for what you are going to! :)

Thank you very much Jason! We hope to see you again soon. A side note: while we will remain "screenless" here at Balsam, we very recently had the opportunity to upgrade our internet capabilities (DSL was our only option before now). We're working on that system this winter ...

We were so excited to spend a lovely summer weekend at what looked to be a wonderful inn. Never again! The place is filthy. So filthy, in fact, that I called the board of health and provided them with pictures of our shower, which was full of black mold. Our bed pillows were old and dirty and had an awful smell. Sat at a table in the lobby to read and play cards and came away with stains on my clothes. The whole place just reeked of dust and grime. Do yourself a favor... go somewhere else!

Room Tip: Go elsewhere!

Dear “Janict310e”

We’re so sorry you were so disappointed by your experience at our inn.

We feel we should point out that our ratings on various travel sites are well above average, that we’ve won TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for multiple years, and that our local health department regularly gives us high marks.

In addition, we're under new ownership for the first time in decades (as of December 2017), and our historic inn is receiving a careful, extensive overhaul. We hope you’ll try us again!

Fun place, with lots of history! Easy drive to many Western North Carolina sights. Breakfast with a view was really super! Enjoyrd the quaint building and laid back atmosphere. Easy directions off main highway. Cost was very reasonable.
