I stayed there with a friend for 4 nights.
The b&B is 10 minutes walk from the train station, the house is ok with very steep stairs.

The room quite small and do not have any other facilities like kettle for water or tea, tv, and no toiletries. Everytime when we want some tea, we have to go downstair to the kitchdn and boil water by ourselves, which is very inconvenient. And most of the B & B would provide simple toiletries like shampoo, shower gel, etc,( I even have to look for towels in my room), which is very basic thing to provided.

The "self-service" breakfast is very poor, with some yogurt, cereal and cornflaks, and coffee machine. It is very disapointing! While many B&B i tried in Italy, they always provide decent breaKfast or cooked breakfast and is not "self-service" Mind you, you have to wash your bowl and spoon after you used it. This is NOT a hostel!!! Not even some basic service!

It would be better if the staff or owner can stay in the house, for better security and for instant enquiry. After 9pm, there are many men wandering around the area, im not a local as I don't feel safe.

This B& B is definitely overpriced and the website said is 35 to 60 euro, it is very fluctuate. For I paid 50 euro per night, stay for 4 nights, with this location and this level of service, it is really Not worth it. I am sure you can find nicer B&B and hotel in the same area with similiar price, but definitely better room , better service with more basic facilities and non-self-service breakfast!

I definitely won't recommend this B& B, is not worth for money and you can get better with this price!

Cantonella, Proprietario at La Cantonella, responded to this reviewResponded 23 October 2015

Dear Creis,

Thanks for your feedbacks and we are very sorry to hear that the B&B did not meet your expectations. If you raised your issues directly with us, I am sure we could have addressed them straight away.

Please find some clarifications regarding your comments:

1) Other B&B might choose to serve breakfast (which seems your favourite option), usually because the kitchen is for the use of the owners only. At “La Cantonella” there is a 24hrs access to the kitchen- completely free of charge- which is shared among all customers. It’s responability of the customers to respect the others. However, my mum cleans all the shared rooms at least twice a day.

2) Breakfast is composed of cereals, buiscuits, croissants, jams, coffee, hot chocolate, yogurt and milk. It is self service and it is all packadged as it must comply with Italian regulations that do not allow our B&B to provide cooked or unpackadge food.

3) Boiler- The B&B supply a fully equiped kitchen. Boilers are not commonly used in Italian kitchens and the B&B does not have one, but if customers are keen on having one we will provide one straight away.

4) Three towels are available for each customer. As I explained on the phone yours were on the wardrobe drawer as I forgot to put them on the bed. I apologised for it.

5) We are sorry you felt unsafe, but there have NEVER been any security problems in the area or in the house.

6) Price varies only according to usage. It’s 50 euro per two people using one room, 35 per one person using one room. Wifi and all time use of the kitchen is free of charge.

7) We found that nowdays people comes with their own toiletries, we will introduce them if there is demand. We do provide anything extra that it’s needed.

You mentioned that it's not worth the money, but I would like to point out that the charge was of only £25 per night in an historical house , clean and luminous with wifI, breakfast and use of the kitchen all included.
If you do find better value for money please let us know

Kind Regards

I went to Italy for all of August with the goal of creating my own cycling training camp. I chose to live in Montevarchi because it’s located centrally in the Tuscany area and it is small enough so that I don’t have to cope with city traffic before reaching the beautiful nature on my bike. I also dislike the artificial disconnect from the local culture that goes along with staying at a typical hotel as a traveller.

So I was searching for a casual place to live at for a full month. Of course I was very very skeptical when deciding, because committing to live at a place you don’t know in a town you don’t know for a month is a pretty high risk.

The place looked nice, but I was still unsure if it would be suitable for me to work at. Before booking, I asked them to run a speedtest on their internet connection. They have a pretty stable 7mbit line with low latency to Germany.

Even before I had booked, they were already very helpful and kind in helping me plan my bike rental. So I decided to take the risk and (without knowing them or their place) booked the B&B La Cantonella for a full month. In retrospect, I couldn’t be happier :) Everyone of that I met of their family was cheerful and easy to get along with. When I arrived in Italy and told Elena that I like classical music, she helped me get a calendar of all the public concerts in the area :)

Throughout the month, Elena and Luciana would sometimes tell me about events that they heard about. It is thanks to them, that I was able to immerse myself in the local culture and seeing some of the coolest parts about mediterranean culture :)

For example, they told me about the famous Siena horse race. It was an amazing experience and I am lucky that I could sneak in and participate. Thank you again Luciana for explaining to me how to participate in the proceedings and get inside the “dogs stand” to have a good view of the race :)

The overall style of the B&B is comparable to a shared student apartment. I met interesting other travelers during shared breakfast or cooking in the B&B’s kitchen. If you expect an all-inclusive five-star hotel experience, you’ll be disappointed. But if you want a more personal experience, this is a great place. Throughout my stay I always tried to make as less work as possible for them because everyone was always so nice, charming and helpful towards me.

My time in Italy was relaxing, fun and very productive work-wise. I'll be busy for a few months to finish up all the great projects I devised in Italy. I'm already looking forward to going back to Italy around April next year.

Room tip: I had the first room on the left side from the entrance staircase. That way, I could easily carry my expensive racing bike into the room :)
