In the heart of the magnificent Saint-Emilion Vineyards, the Château Grand Barrail **** Hôtel - Restaurant - Spa welcomes you to its elegant gourmet restaurant, offering creative cuisine and fine wines. The Chef Romain Gondras is sure to delight most discerning palates by original and innovative à la carte meals and set menus 25 euros (Two meals Menu), matched with carefully selected Bordeaux's fine vines. In warmer weather, you may choose to enjoy your dinner on the terrace, providing unobstructed views over the park and the surrounding vineyards. Our dining rooms With antique-style mouldings, unique stained glass windows, gold highlights and oriental, Viollet Leduc-style paintings giving it a baroque character, the Mauresque dining room keeps with the luxury ambience that used to fill the place since its construction in 1902. After renovation works carried out by Hotels Emeraude, the Rotonde dining room, with its mirrors and its imposing chandeliers inspired by The Petit Trianon Palace, was given back its original beauty. Whether enjoying the grandeur of dining inside or the great views from the patio terrace outside, dining at Grand Barrail is a wonderful experience.

We thought the food very good in terms of taste, texture and appearance. Having enjoyed a 'menu fixe' for lunch and the 'menu decouverte' for dinner, we found the price to be appropriate to the overall location and dining experience delivered.

The service is admittedly a little slow, which can be easily forgotten when enjoying good company with a full glass of wine. On occasions, there were empty wine glasses on our table awaiting replenishment, which was less easy to forget.

The restaurant and the hotel attract a very diverse crowd, which means equally diverse 'tastes' (in the wider sense) to satisfy. To my mind, this is one of the more challenging aspects of dining here.

Alongside elegant diners, dressed immaculately and adding to the sense of occasion, there were those in very relaxed attire who did not. There were couples, whispering romantic missives between each other, alongside families with young children whose sense of decorum had not yet been fully instilled. Chain smokers seated at outside tables enjoyed their noxious elixir at will, whilst adjacent tables struggled to taste their food for the coarse smoke in the air.

As you may have gathered, I think the restaurant does what it does really very well. I actually think it is beholden upon the patrons dining there to up their game.

The restaurant is best to be avoided. 3 hours spent for 3 course fixed dinner. Beef steak was burnt and obviously inedible. I had to return it yet fearful that a replacement will take another hour to get. The service is weak and only one waiter is genuinely trying to save this sinking ship. Needless to say the price is inadeaquate for what you get. This disastrous dinner spoilt the whole impression of our stay at Grand Barrail.

We have lived half the year in our apartment in Spain since we retired 10 years ago. Every years we have made a tour of 7-8 day in connection with my wife’s birthday which is the 28th of February. This year we dicided to celebrate the day in a «chateau» hotel in Saint Emilion in France. As we had a half board reservation I had already checked the menu on the internet and upon arrival we had already decided upon what we would have for dinner. At the restaurant we were presented a menu only available in French and which was quite different from what we had found on the internet. We were told that the menu was changed a few days earlier, but the other menu is still the only one available on the internet when I checked that after finishing our tour! The staff were not very helpful to find dishes to our liking but we managed after long discussions to get a different starter as none of the ones presented to us were to our liking. When I look at the final bill I am afraid that we had to pay a lot extra for that change! The main dishes were composed of just one of fish and one of meat. The only meat dish was fried pigeon – so no I can boast of having eaten pigeon for the first and only time in my life!
We had just placed our order when a group of 7 arrived at the neigbouring table. That looked to be a French salesman with 6 American customers. They had obviously been on a winetesting tour a had a behaviour opon arrival according to that. As they kept on drinking at the table the level of noice and shouting was undecribable. We had to sit for two hours listening to this very loud conversation between the group. This was a group that definitely belonged in a crowded bar and not in a decent restaurant!
As my intention was to give my wife a decent and romantic dinner on her birthday this happening along with the lack of decent food more or less ruined our intention with staying at this hotel. I blame the mangement of the restaurant for allowing this group to destroy the meal for all the other guests and this is not worthy of a decent hotel or of a decent restaurat. The group should have been placed in separate chamber and not amidst other guests in the restaurant. The price level of the restaurant is rather high and then you expect some value for money. As and example the wine list started advocating wines at the cost of 1.100 Euros and the cheapes wine was available for 90 Euros. When you feel that you are in a vulgar and noisy bar this price level makes no sence. If you choose to go down town in Saint Emilion (as we did the next day) you will find very good restaurants with better food and with a far better price level. So my advice is – don’t get trapped - eat elsewhere!!

We were delighted to be given an actual separate carte listing all the vegetarian options for lunch. From these we selected a poached egg in a Jerusalem artichoke soup with black truffles, an apricot couscous, and a beet risotto, all of which were excellent. We followed these up with a coffee gourmand and a tea gourmand - each drink accompanied by a selection of little desserts. The surroundings are elegant rooms with stained glass windows.

We had dinner at this restaurant as we were also guests of the Hotel. The food is good, the service is quite weak but above all, you feel that you've paid a lot for this experience. We ate some specialities (foie, scallops, beef,) which were good but not spectacular. The wine list is extense (it's what you imagine when having dinner at the Bordeaux area), but again, extremely expensive. A good St. Emilion's red wine bottle is priced not less than € 40, which is clearly expensive (perhaps something general in the region). Again, good desserts, but also expensive.
