We took a day trip to the Colliguay Valley in October 2012. We were collected by our guide Janine in Vina del Mar and comprised a small group of three. We drove to the Colliguay Valley which is very much off the beaten track and definitely not part of the conventional tourist trail. On arrival we were introduced to our local guide, Marcello and the horses! The riding experience of our group varied (including no experience at all) and riding Chilean style is very different to European horse riding. A quick lesson and then we were off up the side of the valley. The pace was slow - just as well as the terrain was quite steep - and Marcello ensured that everyone was comfortable with the pace. Both he and Janine had an excellent knowledge of the local flora and fauna and pointed out much of interest on the way. Questions were welcomed and they were happy to stop if you wanted to take photos. We stopped for a picnic lunch (supplied) and then back down the trail before finishing back at Marcello's home for further refreshments. The traditional economy of the valley was explained to us and we were shown the bee hives (bee related products are produced and sold locally) as well as a local craft workshop where the traditional spinning, weaving and knitting skills are practiced by local women and available for sale.
